car over heating

Hello everyone,

I'm new to BMW and i just recently brought 1. Firstly after I drove for a while i smelt burning oil so i popped the hood and there was a lot of smell coming from there and there was a small puddle of oil next to oil filter . Took it the car the mechanic and he said he cant see no leak the smell most probably is excess oil that fell and is burning from the heat of the engine and adviced me to jet wash the excess oil off. So i did that and the smell has reduced but still there.

But I just noticed that there is a lot of heat coming from the car as well. I dont know if it was always like this but i just noticed it.

Could someone please help and advice me what to do

What's the oil level in the engine?

When was the filter changed?

the engine level says maxium and it was serviced in july by the previous owner so the filter must have been changed then

Sounds like the person who last serviced it was less than meticulous about cleaning up the oil they spilled around the filter housing when they changed it - probably nothing to worry about. Have you any indication the car is overheating, other than a subjective 'it feels a bit hot'? BMW are pretty good with warning lights and messages for oil temperature, coolant temperature and so on.

the only indication i have is after i drive for a bit and go to the front of the vehicle is seems rather hot, and when i lift the hood up its really hot there as well, much hotter than any other car i had

Hot doesn't necessarily mean overheating, though. I realise the 318i will run cooler than the 335i, but my car's oil is at 90 degrees C in normal circumstances, and you'll find your coolant is at a similar temperature. You can always do the instrument cluster hack to get the digital temperature gauge if you're in doubt - http://e90.wetpaint.com/page/BC+hidden+menus

My 330d easily feels the hottest of any car I've owned after it's been driven. Think that's just how it's built though. Effective heat exchange, or something

Diesels need to run hotter than petrols to be reasonably efficient.
