How Could This Happen?
Went out of the country for a week. Washed my car the morning before, didn't see anything out of the ordinary. Drove 30 miles the day after I came back, gym, lunch, back home. Notice this on the front left hood/fender. It's huge: at least a foot long by 4ish inches wide. I have no idea how such a pattern could be made. Maybe someone put something on top of my car? I have no idea. It looks like it should buff out with some work, but still. Freaking out.

Did you take it to an automated car wash? Personally, I never do, exactly because of that reason. Those brushes never get washed, so you get the grit of everyone else's car right on yours with very powerful motors behind them. It looks exactly like where the brushes would have the most "force", i.e. the edges of the car. I will take it to a "touchless" car wash sometimes though.
It takes time for those things to show up because the scratches fill up with grit. Scratches are permanant, there's no getting around that. You can buy "filler" that temporarily fills in those miniscule scratches, but those products eventually wear off. when people say "Buff it out" they usually mean home based devices like the above that just mask the problem. Professional tools will take off layers of clear coat etc... and unless you're going to spray another clear coat layer on top, it's there to stay. Either you do permanant "filler" like a clear coat, or you do temporary fillers. |

The paint condition on this car is horrible. It makes me want to cry.

That's most likely not from a car wash. That's some sort of mesh design. Like someone pressed down on a fence, a purse, or a knight's armor

Wow, weird. I have to say though, at first I thought you were just talking about the catastrophic swirl marks you have going there.

Just focus on the scratches that look like those green mesh things they wrap around wine bottles before putting them in a bag. Last edited by churchillps; 08-19-2011 at 04:36 PM.. |

A lot of times if you're buying mulitple bottles of booze, they will wrap them in mesh so the bottles don't bang each other and break. Here's a link with a picture...

We're just as clueless as you are so no matter how many answers you get from members, it still won't be a definite answer. However, we can give you tips and tricks to help those marks appear less on your car. Use polishing compound on areas that are needed and then detail your whole entire car so you won't be labeled as "Swirl Daddy".

Was there any construction or fence work going near where you parked? Looks like a pattern from vinyl coated fencing, maybe some fell or was laid down on the car. Now you have two really good reasons for serious paint correction. Is the car JB?
