Cleaning wheels.....PROBLEM SOLVED
Hello all, i gave the car a quick wash today and when i look closely at the wheels all four are covered in tiny black dots, some quite big actually, and i cant budge them! i use mostly autoglym stuff and some good brushes/pads etc and iv even tried clay bar'ring but the little buggers wont shift!
They have probably been there a while and iv never noticed them, but enough have built up now to make it noticeable, am i right in saying its brake dust that's baked on? and some tar spots? (i regularly get these around the bottom of the bumpers and sideskirts but a clay bar and elbow grease gets rid easily enough). Any suggestions and experience greatly appreciated Last edited by Osian85; 09-03-2011 at 01:12 PM.. |

Iron x is the stuff you need, it will dissolve the baked on brake dust. Once sprayed onto the wheel the iron x turns a purple colour as it reacts with the iron particles then you simply hose it off.
If you wanted a product that you can get in halfrauds or similar, have a look at the new wonder wheels cleaner (the purple one). It works in the same way. You may also need to give the wheels a clean with a tar remover, if it hasn't already been done. |

The BMW wheel cleaner goes red when applied I have some pictures some where, looks like I have run a cow over.
I would clay the wheels once in a while, that shift em |

He's already tried a clay bar at the wheels and it won't shift so it's more than likely brake dust and some tar. I haven't tried the BMW wheel cleaner so can't confirm if it's designed to dissolve the iron particles or not.
Iron x can also be used on the paintwork and is usually an eye opener to see just exactly what is on the paint that can't be removed by clay bar or tardis. |

OK so I bought some IronX, and went to work on the car today, had the wheels off one at a time as I was painting the wheel hubs with hammerite to hide the rust, so I took em into the garden and did the whole wheel with this IronX stuff, which is great stuff - it did get rid of loads of baked-on brake dust, some tar, and some iron filings etc that nothing else could shift, and it was very simple to use, spray it on, wait 3mins, agitate any stubborn bits with a hard brush, then rinse, its PH neutral so wont damage any 'refurbed' wheels, only problem is it stinks! a lot! and is irritant so wear gloves!
It is very good stuff but I must say it did miss some bits, but that could just be me not leaving it long enough to work - I didn't want to leave it on too long (as per the instructions) as it can cause damage. But those bits still there did shift with a clay-bar afterwards, which wouldn't work before. I even had a go on my exhaust which had some crap baked on that NOTHING would remove, and and you can see its worked a treat there too. All in all, great stuff, would recommend to all, and thanks for the suggestion I am going to use what's left (which is plenty after only doing 4 wheels so far) on the bodywork of the car next to get rid of the bits clay-barring usually does, only a lot quicker and easier - before polishing and applying some wax as a sealant. Hope this post helps someone out there.... |

Can anyone tell me more about what stuff it removes from paint work because there's obviously less break dust on there compared to the wheels?
