Do you trust your dealer uses Castrol

Chaps, car is due an oil service soon, just clocked 50k. Phoned around and best price is €191.00 with €257.00 being the worst, all main dealer and just an oil change. Do all dealers have to use the castrol 5w30 fully synthetic or can they use some other LL04 approved oil? As there is quite a difference in price it makes me wonder if the cheapest dealer is using the expensive castrol!

I spoke to VW about the Golf and they said they would use Quantum instead of Castrol even though there are VW recommends Castrol stickers all over the engine.

It's all about profit and BMW are no different. Personally I would take my own oil and save a few quid.

Supply your own and save £££'s

How BMW can charge £190 for an oil change is beyond me!

+1 - I would also ask for the cans back, to make sure that the tech has not kept your oil for his car and used whatever in yours (been known to happen).

I dint think that's really the issue is it, considering you would generally supply the same stuff

The issue is the near 100% markup they put on the stuff!! clowns

Yes, I totally agree with your point about the mark-up, that is why I would supply my own whatever the brand.

Should have mentioned I supply Mobil 1, so having the cans back applies in my case.

Having built competition engines for 35+ years, and having seen the wear rate of Castrol products compared to other oils, I wouldn't put Castrol in my Lawn Mower !

Funny how Mobil 1 was BMW's "preferred" oil until they became involved in F1 and Castrol became a team sponsor, then hey presto Castrol is the best thing since sliced bread.

Also just because F1 teams have product logos on their cars, doesn't mean they actually use that oil. In one team, we were sponsored by "X", and the oil they supplied was put in the team generators, vans, trucks, and free to any team member, who wanted some for their car, it was never used in the race cars !

It just seems too tight to me to turn up with your own oil. Like turning up with your own offlicence beer at a pub or turning up with your own cow at a Cambodian shooting range and wanting to use their rocket launcher....

For me it is not a case of being tight, BMW can't/won't supply the oil I want, so they either let me supply my own oil or I take my business to a dealership who will.

Depends if you are happy to be blatantly robbed by the dealer or maybe you are not that bothered about value for money.

Personally I work hard for my salary and dont believe in just giving it away.

You can always ask which brand of oil will be used. Alternatively and as previously suggested you can supply your own oil and go with the best labour only quotation.

I called the service dept. yesterday at my local dealer and asked them will they do an oil service if I supply the oil....after some eeerrrmmm ah mmmm...hold on until I ask the workshop manager, they agreed that as long as the oil is BMW LL04 approved there would be no problem, however the service guy was pushing for castrol to be used...so now the service will cost €84.00 + cost of 8l of castrol edge 5w30, €86.50 = €170.50...a saving of €20.50 and knowing the right oil is used!

Now I'm pondering, should I be using mobil1
