N54 ECU Flashing
Hello, I'm a first time owner of a 2008 335i Auto and am interested in gaining access to ignition timing, boost, fuel and ETC/Torque calibration tables. I'm sure there must be a software package available which allows the user to modify and reflash the factory calibration, right?
From the reading I have skimmed across over the past couple months in these forums, it seems there are many popular "remap" options available, but I DO NOT WANT to simply install a custom map someone else created. I have calibrated other platforms I have owned over the past 8 years and would like to do the same with this car. Also, I prefer to not use a piggy back system, and would rather flash directly to the ECU through the diagnostic port. Is there anybody here who is doing this or who can point me in the right direction? Upon closer inspection, it appears Cobb has many of the features I'm looking for, but are there others? Thanks |

Wait for Cobb when they release the ATR. No other Flash tune gives you what you want. On the other hand, GIAC has been the most reliable tune so far. Getting my flame suit on.

I'm not sure if anyone understands what the OP asked about.
OP, one of the products you are looking for is DimSport Race Evo Standard or DimSport New Genius (http://www.dimsport.com). They have tools to read the N54 ECU software, write your own tables, etc. But my questions are: are you a tuner ? Do you have a dynamometer ? Are you willing to spend like $7000+ for one of the products ? |

The Dimsport is basically what ESS is using to flash their tune into N54.

Datalogging is great..but lets be real the average user should NOT be writing their own maps or fiddiling w the engine parameters..that is a recipe for disaster in the wrong hands. Me personally ...I dont datalog..I drive instead.. |

Datalogging is a tuner's best friend
I used to datalog weekly on my last platform but then again I was tuning other people's car back then too. |

Ugh...
DimSport is an expensive, incomplete products. If you have the skills and experience to do your own mapping, you can just go at it with WinOLS. To do that, you'll need to start making friends though. Google is your friend. However, the latest Procede user uning software package is probably a better option for most people, who don't have experience with OLS.

I'm not familiar with different tuning options, BUT you don't need to create tables if they are provided for you, which will be ATR supposedly and I hope eventually very comprehensive like EFI live, LT1 Edit... which is what i'm sorta familiar with.
OP, read up on the DME though... depending on your expectations and past experiences, DME logic may NOT be for you. There's a real advantage to the piggies with this platform because of the logic constraints. There has been some indication that this can be changed slightly (maybe drastically) when the DME is fully opened. But we really don't know yet. currently the only option to actually tune by tables and giving the most user control is the Vishnu Procede piggy. EDIT: tables are just the link between various sensors and actuators... this should be fully implemented by the software allowing turning on/off, changing all options and NO need for the user/tuner to create anything... unless you want to design software. oh another note, I would not feel comfortable with a "tuner" only using a dyno and NOT datalogging on the street... the environments, loading is very different. Plus allowing only tuner to change parameters, would mean multiple visits during different weather to confirm corrections... this could get very involved and expensive. I would rather take on the responsibility... just take it slow and conservative.

I've not heard of GIAC, but I did read up on the DimSport product line on the plane ride home yesterday. It seems like a very powerful tool with some advanced user options. I did not see any prices, but I would expect it to be too costly. DimSport will certianly do everything I want and much much more.
On the surface, the Cobb software appears to be what I'm looking for, but their marketing on the website is lacking of much decription. I found a user's manual I may read through to see if it really offers the capability to do a full custom tune. Joshboody, I'm more familiar with TunerCats, HPTuner, EFI Live and Superchips when it comes to tuning. I'm not familiar with some of the acronyms you guys are using here such as GIAC, DME, and ESS so maybe you can tune me in? I agree with he who stated that the average user should not be fiddling with maps. Although I may be unfamiliar with this platform, I am not your average user when it comes to calibrating an engine. Also what is the "ATR" we are waiting for from Cobb? |

I don't understand all this fear mongering about self-tuning. On other platforms, fellow users post their base maps, and others view and make small changes as they see fit. For many, this starting point will be the stage 2 OTS map. Simple and quick enough to switch maps.
