DIY: Mr. 5 Intake
You need approximately 2'-2.5' of the hose from McMaster-Carr, a 3" filter, a 3" joiner, a 3" MAF adapter, and four worm clamps.
Obtain an airbox and disassemble removing lid and filter Make a 3" diameter hole in the side next to the diverter valves. The hole should be positioned as high as possible yet allowing the lid to close. There are lots of ways to do this. I traced the inside of my MAF adapter with a pink paint pen and then cut the circle out slowly with a dremel tool. Cut it too small to begin with and then gradually make it bigger to fit the adapter. In retrospect, using a 3" hole saw is a better method and worth the trouble to get one. Obtain a 3" MAF adapter. I got mine from PepBoys for $5.99 You can order here: http://www.jegs.com/i/Spectre/865/8148/10002/-1 Trim the corners of the adapter. This allows the adapter to fit flush inside the airbox. Put a small bead of RTV on the base of the MAF adapter in the corner between the cylinder and the base. Position the MAF adapter into the hole in the airbox and press firmly so that the RTV makes a good seal with the box. *Wipe away excess. The pink on the inside is from my tracing the airbox hole. ![]() Rotate the nipple on the brake booster line 90 deg out towards the side of the car. This can be done with pliers by holding the hard plastic line and gently rotating the nipple assembly by gripping on the ridges. Do not use the nipple as leverage as it will break off and you'll be left trying to fix it. ![]() Unbolt the power steering reservoir from the black bracket. Remove the black bracket - there are two nuts at the base and one bolt on the top of the bracket. You'll have to move the power steering and coolant hoses to see the nuts. ![]() Remove the black square part hanging down from the inside of the bracket. *I used a dremel tool. *This piece serves no purpose and must be removed to allow the hose to fit. Instead of cutting out completely, I cut most of it away leaving a small amount to maintain the bracket strength. ![]() Reinstall the bracket and power steering reservoir but only on one of the mount screws so that the reservoir is positioned more into the engine bay. *This allows the hose to pass under the bracket. ![]() You need approximately 2'-2.5' of the hose from McMaster-Carr. I tried a couple of different hoses. This one works the best. Order it here: http://www.mcmaster.com/#catalog/117/211/=cgyqaj Use a worm clamp to attach the hose to the MAF adapter and route the hose into the fender well. ![]() You will have to remove the brace present on e92s. *There is one 16 mm bolt and one 16 mm nut holding it in place. *Make sure you replace the nut and put the plastic coolant hose brace back onto the nut. This will protect the coolant hose from the stud that the brace fastens to. ![]() Jack up the car on the center jack point and secure with jack stands. Remove the driver's side front wheel. Remove the fender liner screws from the bottom and side of the driver's side front fender. Pull the fender liner back exposing the area and the hose. Attach your 3" filter http://www.verociousmotorsports.com/...sic-Air-Filter to a 3" joiner http://www.verociousmotorsports.com/...luminum-Joiner Attach the hose to the joiner. Secure all connections with the worm clamps. Replace the fender liner. |
