Oil Change Question
I am due for an oil change (first non free maintenance oil change). I want to take it to an indy shop so I asked whether they used the same brand of oil as the dealer. They said they don't but use the same grade (I believe he said they use Castrol). My question is sometimes I get oil topped up at the dealer as the 335 burns a lil bit of it off. Will it matter that I don't have the same brand as the dealer?

I was surprise when I got a quote from the dealer.. $111 with tax. seemed the easier route to go since oil and filter were close to $80.

Do it yourself, takes 5 minutes. Tischer is selling complete change kits for $69 shipped.

Not trying to be rude or mean but when the boards are filled with non-sense it is very annoying, I mean in the 2 minutes it took for the first reply to your thread you could have used the button and typed 'BMW recommended oils' you would have got this
http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Conte...ngineOils.aspx Direct answer it took me 10 seconds to read 20 seconds your question answered Forum has the exact link in this sticky thread from the maintenance forum http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=529230

The answer to the OP's question is either oil from the dealer or any oil that meets BMW standard LL01 (developed by engineers, not marketing). All of the major brands offer oils that meet this spec, but you may have to hunt for them. Other than oil from the dealer the realistic options are Mobil 1 0W-40 (NOT the 5W-30) or Castrol Syntec 0W-30. Use of non LL01 oils will threaten warranty coverage. Unfortunatly the average American approach is to look at the oil cap and then buy Castrol 5W-30, which is not an appropriate oil for this car. This is a European car. In Europe the car makers control the oil standards, in general through ACEA and then often by additional individual specifications. With any German car one needs to be careful with fluids, and in the case of oil look for the appropriate specification on the back of the bottle. This is not our father's Buick. |

If your indy that you want to take it to is wanting to use Castrol 0w-30 then its ok, as its been mentioned above. Ask your mechanic exactly what oil he wants to put in it.
As for oem oil this is the cheapest i've seen. http://www.ecstuning.com/BMW-E92-335...gine/ES250700/ Just throwing it out there. I ran Castrol 0w-30 in my E46, havent decided if i'm going to go with that or OEM for this first oil change coming up on the E90. |

I disagree with those who say it does not matter. You need to make sure you are topping off with the same grade oil i.e. 0w-30 etc . Brand is not an issue as long as it LL01

I was waiting for the weekly oil post:
Page 183 of the owners manual states if you cannot find LL-01 you can use small amounts of API SH spec or higher to top up. http://www.e90fanatics.com/pdf/E90_OwnersManual.pdf |

its pretty simple. BMW in Germany wants you to use synthetic oil. the only widely available synthetic oils are Castro 0w30 and Mobil 0w40, the rest are just labeled synthetic through some loop hole in USA. I think even BMW 5w30 is not really synthetic.

Am I the only one that pursued Pennzoil Ultra Euro 5w-40? It is BMW LL-01 approved. The local Ferrari/Maserati parts guy is more than happy to sell it to me @ $14 a quart.

Hmm. Not correct. It applies only to Germany.Gr3 oils perform on par or better than "real" synthetics. Many of these gr 4/5 oils (PAO or Ester) have considerable amounts of Group 3 as a carrier for the additives. XOM has been manufacturing GR3+ in the name VISOM since around 2004 and its used extensively in their 0w-40 (along with their Supersyn PAO). IMO It's usually only worth the time to make sure you have re appropriate OEM approval and not worry about base oils. USUALLY.
