Shaving (Facial Hair)
I did a search and it yielded nothing but ass and balls shaving threads.
Looking for some advice/recommendations on safety razors as a solution to my current blade(s). I am using a Schick Hydro, "the best shave for your skin", or so they claim. Although it delivers a close shave, it also delivers horrible razor burn and bumps from time to time. I guess at this point, I really don't give a f about closeness if its going to tear up my skin and not deliver a consistent razor burn/bump free shave. I have heard that quality old school safety razors deliver awesome results.. Halp and thoughts appreciated...... |

I don't have any experience with safety razors but I've done a little research and plan to buy an edwin jagger once I run out of blades for my fusion.
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_no...jagger&x=0&y=0 I read that it is a good idea to buy a variety pack of blades in order to find which one gives you the best shave and it was recommended to buy a block like this to close up nicks when you are done shaving. http://www.amazon.com/Bloc-Osma-Natu...6062152&sr=8-1 There has got to be someone on here that has experience with safety razors that can give you more insight.

I switched to a double edge safety years ago and would never go back. I personally have a Merkur Futur, A badger brush from Art of Shaving and I have used multiple types of creams (Taylor of Old Bond St., Colonel Conk, Art of Shaving etc.) but I go back to C.O. Bigelow's shave cream from Bath & Body Works (same as Proraso but available locally). For blades I have used merkur, feather, and even generic branded with good results.
My skin is pretty sensitive and I get a better (and cheaper) shave with the safety razor. Takes a little longer to shave but the results are worth it imo. |

You're doing it wrong... If you are getting bumps and razor burn with a 5 bladed razor and a moisturizer strip.. You are doing something wrong... I use the Hydro almost every day and I have pretty sensitive skin and I have never had a problem since I started using it. The Mach 3 used to give me terrible bumps. I would try to switch up the shaving cream you are using. Or perhaps the time you are shaving. Safety razors do provide one of the best shaves you can give yourself. However, it requires a bit more attention.

Cold water before you shave will make the hair stand more brittle and give you a cleaner/closer shave. Warm water afterwards will open your pores increasing the effectiveness of any aftershave or lotion you might use. That is if the monologue in American Psycho was correct.

When I see a pretty girl walking down the street I think two things. One part of me wants to take her out and talk to her and be real nice and sweet and treat her right.....

Dear lord, do not advise him to start with Feathers! You'll wreck your face and never give DE (dual edge) shaving a proper chance.
I switched a few years ago and would never go back, it's a smoother and longer lasting shave, and you'll save money too. You'll need a razor (Merkur and Parker both make reasonably priced models), blades (Feathers are good, but a bit uneven and sharper than an ideal first blade, get a sampler pack from West Coast Shaving or Sesto Senso and see what works for your face, everyone likes different blades), shaving cream (the Brits rule here, Truefit & Hill, Trumpers and Taylors of Old Bond Street are "the three t's" and you can't go wrong with any of them) plus a badger brush. You can also use a pre-shave oil and it's nice to have something like an alum block for knicks, they'll stop the bleeding quickly. I shave in the shower, it gives the best shave, plenty of warm water and a mirror. I've changed blades a few times but keep coming back to the Personna red packs from Israel, but try plenty. I flip the blade after every shave and replace it after five days and skip shaving on the weekends. Two last notes, you can not carry on DE blades and I refuse to check, so I do travel with a multi blade and they suck balls, anyone that tells you you're doing it wrong hasn't had a proper shave. Second, going down the DE path will almost certainly lead you to consider using a proper, single edged razor. |

Read this first:
http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/688684...ekend_edition/ Then go buy a nice badger brush and some quality soap or cream. I use Musgo Real shave cream, can buy it off amazon for $10/tube. One tube lasts several dozen shaves. A good brush and cream alone will change your life. I'm a fan of the DE razors, but they do take more time to shave with and they're a little tricky to get the hang of. However, nothing can shave as close as a good DE razor. |
