Returning from picking my son up from school, on the motorway and doing about 60. All of sudden a huge bang/knocking sound appears. So stopped immediately to inspect. This is what appears to be the fault

Pressure loss was immediate but give the manufacturer their due that the tyre held well and didn't blow. New tyre ordered (Falken obviously) and should be mobile pretty soon.

Another nail in the argument about RFTs then also

Falkens fitter by my local shop all have a waranty that covers punctures FOC.
They replace to value of the remaining tread, or repair for free.
Its a Falken deal, not that of the tyre shop - don't you have this?

Don't think so bud...never knew of such a deal existed to be honest and if it did my tyre guy withholds that info lol.

Luckily my tyre man did new one for £120 supplied and postage. The old one had about 6mm still remaining as well, though can't see this being repaired due to the entry position.

It's a Falken tyre (not RFT lol)....!!! The car was flat bed to home.

Well no Falkens available due to Tsunami in Japan. So got a temporary replacement....fitted today.

The culprit, a wheel weight. What I want to know why the tire pressure loss feature never sounded!!!

I had nothing in the tyre...just air. I think an investment in tyre weld is a must. Very fortunate to say the least...

If you stopped very quickly after it went POP with no 'Bong' it might be that it takes a while before the computer works out there is a soft wheel??

Do you re initialize the system after fitting the tyres mate?

If you don't do this then it wont bong when it goes off after the swapped tyres.

Also: Did you actually have the sensors fitted?

Good thread in those tyres that they held and let you stop safely. A decade or so again damage like that could well have ended up with a flipped car at those speeds...

No sensors on all bar the very earliest UK cars - our system works by comparing wheel rotation speeds, which IMHO isn't half as good as the US system with wireless pressure sensors in the valve stems and receivers in the arches.

Oh right! Didn't realise that. So basically as the thread of the tyre held: The car didn't trip in Tiko's case. That's outright dangerous as people are relying on the system to trip and may end up thinking "WTF WAS THAT.. But the car thinks all is well.. so.. " and end up keeping on going.

When I say "people", you know.. I'm not meaning the kind of people who are on an enthusiasts forum. But some people just trust the technology. Not good.

I think the issue is the amount of time that the rotational system takes to detect a pressure loss when compared with the system that directly measures the pressure. The algorithm has to be able to cope with, for instance, the car going around a roundabout, where the wheels on the outside will be spinning quicker than the wheels on the inside, so it's likely that it works from some sort of time average - this may not be quick enough in the event of a rapid deflation.

Which I've found out first hand goes off when you go down recently resurfaced roads! Gravel gets stuck to the tyre and throws it out. Mine was insistent I had a puncture for about 3 miles
