The wheels could be out of round (the front ones) or you could need an alignment. You should have both checked out (the other possibility is that the brakes are warped, but that's unlikely at this point).

I have taking it back to the dealer twice and they tell me that it is normal for the shimmy but this isnt the first bmw i have driven. I just want to know if this is normal for a diesel. Plus for the past week we have been getting colder weather and the car vibrate and will stop after 50 mph. Do you think it maybe tires problem. Car was Setting on the lot for over a year before i brought it. Car has 3000 miles on it.

I was having a steering wheel vibration problem and after new rim, new tires, road force balancing on three occasions, they finally replaced the Thrust Arms and Bushings.....problem solved. She runs solid without vibration..yippeee!

Thanks guys ill try and bump the tire pressure up. but i have took it back to the dealer twice so i think they should have check wheel balance and tire pressure. The dealer that is performing the service isnt the dealer that i brought the car from so i think they dont give a crap for my business there or that the service guys doesnt know anything. I had an E92 M3 with a way more stiff suppression and my streering never shimming or cause vehicle to vibrate. This is what the service tell me "Your car has the sport package so it is a more responsive to the road" and i told him i Had a car that had a more responsive then this before and then he tell me that the 335d is a double fist driving car. This is when the car was still 2 week old. What a joker service person. I guess when you have an auto bmw you have to drive with two hand and when you have a manuel that bmw is made to drive with one hand or single fist as he put it. Also i had the car realign as will so that was rule out alignment problem

Not all balancing machines are created equal and same can be said for the technicians operating the machine. If your dealer doesn't have a Hunter Road Force balancing machine take it to a shop that does. If you have a bent wheel or out of round tire that the machine can't balance it will tell you exactly what the problem is and how much it is out of spec. If the wheels and tires are true then you can rule out them out.

I have the same thing. Brand spankin new 328i, wheel and seat shimmy at 60 mph. Pretty annoying.
My car was on the lot for over a year. Headed back to the dealer this weekend if they have a slot. |

This is what the dealer did for me realign and balance and i still had the problem and they say it was the road and that my car had sport suspension on it just talking out of there ass. Then i told them i had an M3 before with A way more aggressive suspension then i my car now and they was like it may be this and may be that . The problem is that your Tire has a flat spot on there and i had to put about 45PSI in the tires and drove it like that Until the car Hit 4500 or so miles until it stop the shimmy or sometime you may have a bad wheel. See if they can replace your tires.

My car had shimmy new and they replaced 2 tires (since I had less than 1kk miles on the car).
Later I went for rotation and then another rotation at a tire shop. The tire shop was laughing at the dealer work because the dealer tech used offsetting weights to bring into balance which is supposedly a no no |

No our cars, regardless of the models should NOT have a shimmy. Anyone who tells you this is normal is blowing smoke. As you feel it in the wheel, that elimnates most the other rotating components such as engine or drive shaft.
The alignment would have to be pretty far out to cause a shimmy. It's either something is not balanced or something's not round. As others have said when this happens you need to have the tire balanced on the hunter ROAD FORCE balancer. All BMW dealers are suppose to have this. You can have a tire that balances and spins true on a normal balancing machine. But under load, it may no longer be round or roll smoothly due to a defect in internal construction that cannot be seen. As a minimum I would insist on seeing at least the front tires spun on the balance machine. I'm expecting that they know how to balance the tire properly with the weights. Check for the wheel running true (both inside and outside beads), check that the outer diameter of the tire runs true and does not have a hop in it, and check that the tread runs straight and is not weaving back and forth as it spins. ANY of these defects will cause a shimmy. If it passes all the visual tests it will need to be put under road force loads, which is a drum that presses against the tire simulating the weight of the car. It measures the conistency of the rotating diameter under load. This almost always finds the problem. I know a real good reading is like 4 or less and anything over 10 is likely to be felt (not sure what the units are). I had a similar issue when I purchased Yokohama tires for our E46 (never again). For whatever reason they do not seem to understand the point of the tire is to be perfectly round! After having one tire replaced, the best 2 on the front still yielded a small high speed shimmy in the steering wheel. They can never be rotated becasue the tires now on the back are so bad. Just waiting to burn them up and replace them. Last edited by kbsilver; 01-06-2012 at 01:54 PM.. |

Hey guys I'm new at BMW and i got a 2010 e92 335xi. When I got it everything in te steering wheel worked fine. Then I changed the battery and they didn't work nor did the padle shifters. Does anyone know why? I brought at BMW but they needed the car at the shop for many hrs. And for 130$ per hr it's not cheap. I was wondering of anyone know how to fix it. Should I open the steering wheel controls see if there
Is a loose wire or something? |
