** Nurburgring Trip June 2012 **
All,
This post is a MAJOR UPDATE as Ant and I have now finalised some of the details for this trip. When: Departing August 18th 2012 and returning August 21st 2012 (ish.) Where: Nurburgring! Duh! Details: On Monday 20th, we will be participating in Dino's track day offer between 08:00 and 13:00. Anyone who wants to participate in the track day will need to pay a £200 deposit pretty much ASAP with the balance being paid 4 weeks before the event. As Dino has said - the more people who book, the cheaper it will get.... If you ARE interested, PM me or Dino and we can get you some details etc. Accomodation: We have found a hotel called 'Hotel-Restaurant birgeler hof' which is a reasonable price and looks ok - main thing is its only about 15 miles from the Ring. I've no problems with anyone staying elsewhere etc as hopefully we can all meet up on the Sat/Sun evenings and have some food etc. Travel: We are aiming to head out via Dover at 12:15 on Saturday the 18th. Obviously, we can meet people for a convoy on the Euro side if anyone else wants to go to Calais or via the tunnel etc - let me know and we can organise something no problem. Return will be however you want, but for me it's going to be Dunkirk to Dover on Tuesday 21st at around 13:00. Deviations: So, Ant and I are already making some slight changes to our plan to accomodate our specific requirements. Firstly, on the Monday (after the track day and all other fun is done) Jen and I will be driving back to Brugge where we will be staying for the night to catch some sights and drink some tasty beer - anyone who wants to is welcome to join us. Ant and his wife are heading around Europe for some sightseeing, so you MAY be able to join them for some of that part of the trip before returning home, if you want to. I really fancied this, but I don't think we will have the holiday to spare. C'est la vie. So basically, I hope to see some of you getting booked on the Track day to help us drive the price down!! I think (being 100% honest) that if we can get enough numbers it will just about make financial sense. Thanks Regards Matt Last edited by RagingKileak; 08-13-2012 at 07:25 AM.. |

How much does a trip like this normally cost? Does it mean having to get tyres for the ring and extra insurance etc?
Never done anything like this and sounds interesting but just wary or the extra cost/hassle it is?

some good reading
http://nurburgring.org.uk/ http://nurburgring.org.uk/insurance.php for a weekend it round 400 - 500 quid in food fuel and accomodation. you dont need any extra tyres just make sure you go with fully working brakes, suspension and tyres. track insurance i think is round 200 if you can find a place that will insure you, your normal car insurance wont cover the nurburgring. i will post up some b&b's that may be options we will go for that are close to the track. list so far Matt + 1 (golf gti) Ant + wife (e46 m3) Allun - Ants mate - (kawasaki ninja)

Cost of accomodation, fuel, food, a few laps of the Ring and train/ferry fare are likely to run to £500 - £600 quid.
I did about 10 laps in my 1996 M3 last year and didn't need tyres, but I did kill the clutch, gearbox, diff seal, 1 bearing and 1 wishbone along with a pair of front brake pads. You can judge by that what you will, but I would budget at least 2-500 quid for parts/tyres/emergencies depending on what you drive. Insurance will run you around 1% of your cars value per day, usually with a hefty excess around 5-10,000 quid depending on the cars value. Most people say it's not worth it as a result. It's a very hit and miss logic deciding whether or not to drive on the Ring without a 'specific' track day policy for the track itself. Your insurance company 'probably' won't cover you for it, but they probably won't or can't legally exclude it either, as it's a public toll road. Whether you insure your car in advance or not, if you crash on the Ring you are going to need deep pockets. I'm not trying to scare you off - I just did it without any insurance and was prepared to bear the cost if I damaged either the car or the track, or anyone else I suppose!! I'm not sure what to do about the Golf this time, I might be willing to look into a 'group buy' on insurance if enough people are interested. I'm sure an organised group will be far more attractive to the underwriter and provide more revenue and less risk! Regards Matt |

Could well be in for this.
PS: Accomodation. Eddie's place in Adenau (Hotel am Nurburgring). He's literally 10 yards from the halfway ring entry point (Breidsheid/Einfahrt), serves steak on a stone and beer by the litre, and has 4/6/8 man apartments which very much sound like what you are after. Last of all he has covered garages at an additional cost if required, or pretty much infinite parking otherwise. Further to this, literally 2 corners away is a Suzuki swift rental place. I only mention them as they are expect mechanics generally and more than willing to carry out odds and sods for you. They changed my brake fluid and tyres for me last time I was out there. Good prices too. Especially for T1Rs which they had in stock and which I was running at the time (They also carried R888's at the time as they fitted both of these tyres to their cars) There was an "EBC man" they knew too who drove from somewhere with the fluid for me, FoC. Really nice guys.

By the way the Nurburgring is no longer a "public toll road". It is now a private track. This is why they are able to link the GP circuit and the Northloop on certain days now. This changed last year.
As such you are absolutely definitely not covered, and certain insurers have been known to go a step further and void your policy completely if they've found out you have been on track.

It covers damage to the track etc, it will pay out for your death, but does not mention cover to your car or third parties. I looked into insurance the last time I went, and the only cover I could get would be for an organised track day.

are all accidents treated as 50:50 liability or if some guy sideswipes me in a Veyron, am I bending over?
I read some horror stories of people being billed thousands for replacing armco, closure of the 'ring and air ambulances I'll be happy paying £99 a day for peace of mind

From the enquiries I made last time I went to the ring, your UK insurer will pay out for a third party claim as it's EU law, however your insurer will come after you to recoup their loss on that 3rd party payout. So if you bin your car (which is uninsured), and cause damage to another (3rd party payout), your in deep, deep shite!

Big man's rules on a racetrack. If someone hits me: Or I hit someone else, I fix my car. He fixes his. Given that I'd outright refuse to hand over insurance details, and given that it's a private racetrack so the police wouldn't care: If anyone has an issue with that; tough crap really.
