Anyone done any 30-70 timings?
A bit chavvy I know but I'm interested to compare my new 330d against my old one on performance so rather than smoking the tyres on 0-60's I like to do 30-70 thru the gears to give a good indication of mid range pull.
I'll post my figure in a while after a few others post as I'm very interested to hear about 335d and 335i figures and see how much slower my car is . I cant find any stats on these cars on the 'net. In fact, post up figures on any car if you like 330d pre and post LCI, 330i, 320d, even M3, whatever.... So if anyone fancies doing a quick test on a level road for either manual (thru the gears) or auto (in kickdown) then post them up. . What I do is hold the speed at a constant 30mph for a few seconds - then floor it. Just use a stopwatch to time to 70mph. Anyone up for this? |

You do need a level straight road (you dont want to worry about having to steer as well as change gear and operate the stopwatch), otherwise the figures get a little skewed. Its only a bit of fun and it dont matter who is quicker than who etc.... |

Very inaccurate with just a stopwatch and your speedo.
Best off perfecting your launch and getting up pod. Although I too have done what you have done but its a little academic.

Can't remember. Have them on vid somewhere I'll have a look. But i could be out as you could be. So pretty pointless. Also Gradients will affect these already inaccurate results.

heres some videos taken of my 335d - not great quality in there there is one where the speedo flies from 120 to 130mph in 5th then I have to back off - amazed me how quick it was see link for my youtube vids http://www.youtube.com/user/black335d |

When I did my unofficial timing the other night I got 5.16s. Was quite pleased with that, especially as my car has only done 300 miles . In my old 330d I did 5.9s on exactly the same stretch of road.
I've found a few 30-70 stats from Autocar magazine on a few 3 series they have tested..... |

You need to get hold of a Racelogic Performancebox or similar.
Shame I just sold mine. Then you can accurately log anything you wish.

Yes I think you could get quite accurate results with a good bit of kit.
Or for something cheap, there this for anyone who has a PDA......http://www.pocketgear.com/uk,en,gbp/...t-details.html To eliminate gradients on the road take a reading each way and take the average. |

For what it's worth as a comparison, I have a Racelogic Performance box and have timed my E46 M3 smg at 4.1s. (Evolve remap only).
This is encouraging to hear the 330d are that quick. I'm looking to buy a E92 330d / 335d early next year. Last edited by Mustard3; 09-26-2011 at 04:41 AM.. |

I'm sure the 335d is the same too.
Mind you, I booted mine coming off a roundabout and the traction control light lit up at about 40mph - and that was in the dry with virtually brand new tyres. My old 330d didnt do that. |

If you have an iPhone there is a really cheap app called dynolicious, and one that BMW offers as well, times it perfectly.
I have a Race Technology AP22 and I was getting almost identical results with the dynolicious app. You can do 0-60mph, 1/4 mile, and 30-70mph etc. It gives you splits as well. |

It helps a lot, but ultimately after that traction is limited by your tyres and your ability to 'feel' the car.
I found the ATB Quaiffe is the best mod, although expensive.

Anything in the 5 second bracket from 30-70mph is quick and that timing bracket is I think the best measure of real-world performance. As a comparison, a quick scan on YouTube shows a Corvette Z06 with a 505hp 7.0l V8 covers the same speed increment in around 4 seconds.

I wonder what the difference is for 30-70 'thru the gears' or in 3rd gear.
4.1s (1/2/3rd) vs 5.79 (3rd) for E46 M3. Probably less of a difference with a diesel. 3.2s in my son's Hayabusa powered kit car! |

The torque is highly addictive! Very different delivery than a high revving straight six but I'm sure your very aware if that!
