335 revealed!
Ever wonder where the "335" came from? (not exactly a 3.5 l. engine as you know). My friend and resident expert on all things fast, suggested that a likely inspiration was from the technology wonder kit that was the Luftwaffe. Late in the war, they introduced a twin engine super-screamer figher that would have left P51's littering Western Europe if they'd have gotten a few more built. Twin engine propeller/pusher design, ultra-fast, breakthrough technology.....hmmmm...sounds a little like my favorite car! Check it out motorheads...the Dornier 335...Me thinks rattling around Munchen are some guys pining for the good old days.

In all reality, I think it was done for marketing purposes more than anything. I remember reading somewhere that to cut costs of a newer 3.5Liter motor BMW decided they would just up the HP on their tested 3.0 motor by adding the turbo's instead of going with the bigger motor.
They in turn changed the model from a more accurate 330 to 335 to compete with it's similarly powered 3.5 liter competitors. *i.e. Infiniti, Nissan, Mercedes

Its done for marketing IMO. Most retards will hear 335 and think that the engine is bigger.

+1. I have already read numerous posts on other forums of people thinking the 335 mean 3.5 liter.

I'm sure they didn't name it after this "technology," but it concerns me that someone felt the need to mention that. btw -- it doesn't matter when we were born; my father was in the U.S. Army during WWII and my parents have friends who are Holocaust concentration camp survivors...from generation to generation, we NEVER forget!

It all started in the early 80s, when BMW's flagship was the 733 (or was it the 735? Jeez, can't remember anymore). Anyway, they wanted something to compete with the big S class V8 cars, so they turbocharged the 3.3 (or 3.5L) engines and gave the cars the designation 745.
So from that point on, whenever they wanted to emphasize the performance they have inflated the badge number, and whenever they wanted the opposite they've shrunk it. (Think E90 330 vs. 325 for example). Pure marketing exercise... Oh wait, now that I think about it, I think it started a few years earlier than that with the US-spec E21 320i, which was a 1.8L... |
