seriously it will work depending on what kind of NAS you have and a little setup on your local network.

i thought that wouldn't be that hard either. i'm having a hard time setting up a network. I've only ever just tried to access the internet - never set up a home network before.

The issues I’m having:

Screen Resolution/Screen Size
Setting up the network – none of the devices are communicating with eachother (including NAS)
Setting up the media download software suites
Getting the iPad app to communicate with the XMBC software

Screen resolution/Screen size depends on your incoming video supported.
NAS doesn't communicate might due be it didn't have/get an ip address. Check its configuration & check if the router can see it. It can be the cable is broken as well.
Do you want to download medias on your NAS directly ?
Is your XMBC supported iPad app? Is it in linux?

question though, do you know of a way to effectively be able to view my local media on the NAs over iPhone or iPad from a remote location?
