I think that's a pretty good rate. Most CUs around here are offering about the same (maybe slightly higher).

I got approved at two local credit unions, Educators FCU for 6.00% and IBEW FCU a couple of days back for 5.25%. Both for 60 month terms.

Got 6.25% from Capital One. However, I was able to get 5.75% from a local dealership. I was not going to use dealer financing but was told that there are "blue" and "green" Capital One checks and one of them charges dealerships $500. The dealer has to charge me that $500 if they got charged. No wanting to risk the $500 charge (because I haven't received the check yet) - I went with dealer finance and was able to get a lower rate. But really the 0.5% difference lowers the payment only by $5/month in my case. Not too much saving but this is mostly a good feeling to get "better" deal not the amount of money saved.

4.5% from JFCU.
5.0% from NFCU.

Join a credit union, they have much better rates in general.

I double-checked with Capital One, and they said that they DO NOT charge an additional fee for using the "Blank Check". It is essentially cash, and if the dealer is charging you to use it, you should report them.

Don't forget, the dealer gets a percentage if you finance through them, so it is in their "interest" to finance you.

I am considering doing the same thing. What happens if you do not use the blank check? Are there any fees or penalties involved? I figured it was a good way to negotiate.

I went with the capital one blank check too...it actually should be arriving in today or tomorrow. Has anyone else had problems with it?

For the Capital one check, do you have to sign up online, or can you go to a local Capital One branch?

I signed up online - it was really quick, less than 15 minutes. I have capital one bank and credit card accounts too though, so I'm not sure if this helped speed along the process.

Five minutes after I got off of the phone with them, I had an email saying that my check had been mailed!

Perfect. That's what I was hoping. Bring a blank check with me to delivery, and if they can beat it great, if not, no big deal.

Not only was the Navy 5.0% back in Oct. when I was shopping, but that is for up to 72 mos. (that's dangerous in that the pymt. is low and a long time to take to pay back, but the rate is very favorable) Problem was I am not a member of NFCU. Still, my FCU did 5.5% at 60 mos. Capital One is not good, that rate is high relative to credit unions....my dealership said the same thing about some additional $500 deposit that I would get back in the future (for using CapOne), something about the paperwork catching up to the blank check....

The local CU was 6.24%. There is one more I am going to check, but I wanted to have a preapproval before picking up my car. I did not want to go into the dealer having to use their financing. If I find a better rate at a CU, or if the dealer can beat it, then I won't use the check and ho harm is done.
