...just got pulled over for some BS from some jealous cop...
So, i'm coming back from the movies, doing the speed limit (maybe 1 over, whatever).
He stops me and says "Two things: One, the law says you can't alter the sound of your exhaust to make it louder. Two, the law says you can't put film over any of your lights to alter the reflectiveness or the light output" I just politely said "okay, thanks officer, i'll get that fixed right away" I'm calling bullshit! I went through the washington magistrate and the last i seen, it says your lights have to be seen from a certain distance (forgot the exact distance) and it briefly mentioned tint film, but it's immediately trumped with 'light seen from XXXft' Same thing goes for exhaust... wtf? Never heard of anything about altering your exhaust to make it louder. I actually FOUND the state law this week and local law regarding exhaust loudness and it distinctly says you can't be louder than 95dB at 3/4 rpm at a 45degree angle from the exhaust tip (i got mine recorded at 89dB)... This is such a gray area, especially when you have 1,000 honda civics in washington with loud ass exhaust running around. Even old school muscle cars with flowmaster and magnaflow exhaust running around that are DAMN loud! Stupid cop was just jealous cuz the only nice car he drives is his damn crown vic with lights on top of it... any other time, he's driving the minivan to take his fat wife to the donut shop... >__> for some reason, i felt like not getting that blowjob back from the movies, now i wish i would have went ahead with it... Unless its a fully loaded car good luck trying to find someone whose willing to spend 21 on it. In terms of lync's car if 20 inch wheels from a 2005 rap video, red roundels, and blacked out taillights are your cup of tea then I guess its pretty cool. But to each their own. I was just annoyed by all the people with 325/328s who think their car is so exclusive just cause its a BMW. Not trying to get into an argument with anyone who drives a 325/328, I just had to say my piece don't mind me.

definitely hater central in here. It's not about worth (price related). Only here (online) is where people speak their opinion and hate on my setup... anywhere else i get compliments all the time. Sorry my car is not stereotype to concave bbs wheels... it's ugly. So as for people hating on a 325... even if i had an M3, i'd still have it set up with 20" gloss black wheels and still get the same amount of compliments and the same haters... just how it goes.
As for still crying about it... sure, i'm venting about getting pulled over at all. The reason being is that i aim to find and print out that state/local law about the two "violations" and that's time out of my day of watching netflix. I'm certain that cop was full of shit. |

cop was right about the exhaust under RCW 46.37.390(3). However, he is reaching a bit about the light under RCW 46.37.030(3)

I just get pissed about this whole aftermarket exhaust when a Harley drives by my house at 2am loud as hell setting off car alarms and is fine with is annoying ass exhaust but a car is cited with an exhaust that is modified.

exhaust... gotcha... looks like i'm gettin a muffler. ^__^ thanks! As for the ....030(3) it doesn't really give any amplifying information on the tail light tint... in WAC 204-10-090, it says "If aftermarket equipment is installed on a vehicle, it must not impair the effectiveness of equipment required by 49 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 571, chapter 46.37 RCW or Title 204 WAC." -in my case, my aftermarket lights are LED and higher light output than the OEM bulbs that were initially installed, by putting tint over them, i've perhaps brought the quality back to OEM standard, but that's at the discretion of the police officer pretty much... which is sort of a gray area. This in no way impededs the EFFECTIVENESS of the light, it can still be seen VERY clearly from a very far distance RCW 46.37.020 "When lighted lamps and signaling devices are required. Every vehicle upon a highway within this state at any time from a half hour after sunset to a half hour before sunrise and at any other time when, due to insufficient light or unfavorable atmospheric conditions, persons and vehicles on the highway are not clearly discernible at a distance of one thousand feet ahead shall display lighted headlights, other lights, and illuminating devices as hereinafter respectively required for different classes of vehicles, subject to exceptions with respect to parked vehicles, and such stop lights, turn signals, and other signaling devices shall be lighted as prescribed for the use of such devices." 1,000ft... easily visible, no doubt RCW 46.37.050 Tail lamps. (1) After January 1, 1964, every motor vehicle, trailer, semitrailer, and pole trailer, and any other vehicle which is being drawn at the end of a combination of vehicles, shall be equipped with at least two tail lamps mounted on the rear, which, when lighted as required in RCW 46.37.020, shall emit a red light plainly visible from a distance of one thousand feet to the rear, except that passenger cars manufactured or assembled prior to January 1, 1939, shall have at least one tail lamp. On a combination of vehicles only the tail lamps on the rearmost vehicle need actually be seen from the distance specified. On vehicles equipped with more than one tail lamp, the lamps shall be mounted on the same level and as widely spaced laterally as practicable. (2) Every tail lamp upon every vehicle shall be located at a height of not more than seventy-two inches nor less than fifteen inches. (3) Either a tail lamp or a separate lamp shall be so constructed and placed as to illuminate with a white light the rear registration plate and render it clearly legible from a distance of fifty feet to the rear. Any tail lamp or tail lamps, together with any separate lamp or lamps for illuminating the rear registration plate, shall be so wired as to be lighted whenever the head lamps or auxiliary driving lamps are lighted. again: 1,000ft... Only thing i think they can get me on is this: RCW 46.37.060 Reflectors. (1) Every motor vehicle, trailer, semitrailer, and pole trailer shall carry on the rear, either as a part of the tail lamps or separately, two or more red reflectors meeting the requirements of this section: PROVIDED, HOWEVER, That vehicles of the types mentioned in RCW 46.37.090 shall be equipped with reflectors meeting the requirements of RCW 46.37.110 and 46.37.120. (2) Every such reflector shall be mounted on the vehicle at a height not less than fifteen inches nor more than seventy-two inches measured as set forth in RCW 46.37.030(2), and shall be of such size and characteristics and so mounted as to be visible at night from all distances within six hundred feet to one hundred feet from such vehicle when directly in front of lawful upper beams of head lamps, except that reflectors on vehicles manufactured or assembled prior to January 1, 1970, shall be visible at night from all distances within three hundred and fifty feet to one hundred feet when directly in front of lawful upper beams of head lamps. my tint covers up the reflector portion... i can likely justify this with a decoratively placed reflective tape along the rear end somewhere... To make things fair, your 335 looks exactly like a 325/328/330i to the rest of the world. I'm sure a small percentage knows the difference between the N52 and N54 outside of the enthusiasts. So really, a BMW is a BMW to them.

You said you got out of the movies, I'm assuming it's "late"... cop could have just been trolling for drunk drivers. I got pulled over a few weeks back for "speeding" when in reality my break lights just lit up as I adjusted the cruise control down as I passed him... Answered his questions, passed the sobriety test and was on my way, not a big deal =)

Anyway, i just called SAE international, and they said it's possible to get a court approval (from a judge) to say rather or not the tinted tail lights can still be street legal. It's very rare that they'll even have the proper equipment to test the luminescence of your tail lights. And the reflector isn't necessary on the tail lights themself, they can be placed on the bumper, for instance. I'll probably dig up some information this week on how many lumen OEM vs ZOMK Speed tail lights are and mathematically prove that the LED light passes through the tint a LOT better and is easily visible from 1,000ft. I'm sure if the judge is having a good day, they'll sign my request. |

+1. No way I ever heard a bimmer, or even a honda, be as loud as the annoying harleys. They even got to be ridiculed on South Park, but I'm not sure any riders would be watching said material...

no, the cop was just the usual pain the law allows him to be: why not screw somebody up, all in line of "duty". rest assured that if he could have fined you for this stuff he would've. my experience has been that less 5% of cops that find you in any kind of trouble will let you slide. for the rest of these non-fined "issues" they find, they just rely on public unawareness of the laws and they just give a hard time cause they can...

Shit happens bro, just move on. They can actually pull you over for whatever reason they want.
As someone mentioned earlier, it was probably to see if you were intoxicated or not. |
