Unhappy Need Help with HPB CanBus HID Fog Errors

OK, maybe someone can shed some light on this problem:

I installed the HPB HID Fog setup on my 09' 328ix E92 using their BMW CanBus setup (stated to have no errors/no flicker)

Lights worked fine for a day or two, then I started getting first the Low Beam error code, then the Parking Light error code come up on the dash - only when I turned on the fogs. If I turned them off, the error codes would go away.

That then progressed to both error codes popping up whether I had the fogs on or not, while in Auto headlight mode (only mode I wish to use) and the errors don't go away - I always have the warning triangle on dash and when using stalk (I do not have iDrive) to got to 'Check Control' the error codes are stored.

Been working with Fred @ HPB and he has been more than helpful, sent me out another set of CanBus ballasts. I installed the new ballasts, and both error codes still pop up regardless of whether fogs are on or not.

Both ballasts are mounted directly to the front frame rail of the car + I installed the supplied short Ground wire under the top ballast fastener and to a seperate place on frame rail for good measure.

Wiring is pretty much foolproof except for possibly where the harness from factory wiring attaches to the top of the ballast. On the ballast connector, there are 2 lugs, one on either side. One lug is larger and totally square, the other is smaller and has a point at the bottom. The harness connector has locking tabs that seem to be made perfectly to lock over the smaller tab with point on bottom - to get it to connect the other way is more difficult.

I have the wire connected to ballast with locking tabs on small lug with point. as shown here:

Again, all lites work fine and look great, but I still have the annoying error codes that won't go away and come up every time I start the car.

And no, there aren't any instructions with the kit...

Anyone have any ideas?

If errors are corrected, will they go away on their own, or still continue to pop up unless manually cleared even though there is no longer an error?

At this point, after jacking up the car on both sides, removing wheels & inner fender liners multiple times - I'm totaly disgusted, and about to put the factory halogen bulbs back in a call it a day

I have that kit as well. I get a error once in a while but goes away. I'd call them and speak to them.

Yeah, like I said, I have been working with Fred from HPB and he has been very helpful - sent me out the new replacement ballasts without question.

I installed the new ballasts this past Saturday and was still getting the hard errors (stored in Check Control) - that is, until this morning - now I get error icons come up on dash, warning triangle shows for a while, then goes away, no hard errors stored under Check Control. Still annoying, so I guess I need to go in and code out the fogs

Interesting. Did you happen to order the package under the BMW section, or did you order the standard fog light kit and add the canbus option? Only reason I ask is because, well number one, it's strange they have two different item listings, but number two, the BMW specific one is $10 more, and they refer to it as "ultra canbus".

I just ordered D1S 6000k replacements and the BMW specific 9006 6000k HID foglight package from them today, so hopefully I don't run into the same issues.

I ordered from the BMW Lighting specific category, 'BMW HID Fog Light & headlight Kits'

#E92H8KIT $109.99

High Performance Xenon H8 PnP HID Conversion Kit with Ultra CanBus Ballasts for BMW E92

None of the ballasts pictured on their site is what you actually get - Fred explained this is to protect their product from being copied...

He also stated that it is very rare to have a bad ballast, and agian, the ballast was fine as far as actually lighting the bulbs, apparently I just had a problem with the error elimination circuitry in one of them.

There are other members that have these installed with no problems - that is why I chose to buy from them due to their reliability. Not unhappy in the end - Fred took care of any problems quickly

Hmm...that's strange, considering they have the best reputation with error-free products. And you don't even have a "problem-year" car (06/07), so this makes even less sense. Good luck with your fix!

So all is well again

I'm glad their customer service is stacking up like it should. Did your errors go away? I know about a dozen locals with their kit and it works seamlessly for all of them including myself.
Can I ask, was the car ever in an accident?

Didn't get any pics yet, been busy - but they are definitely noticeably brighter then the stock halogens. I have 6000K D1S, got the 6000K HID fogs to match. When I turn on the fogs, I can see a much brighter illumination to both sides of the road (good for spotting all those PA deer waiting at the side of the road to run out in front of the car ), whereas before, I couldn't even tell the fogs were on.

Haven't had anyone flash their hi beams as of yet, so they must not be too blinding to oncoming tradffic.

Fred constantly keeps in touch to see how it's going, in fact, he just sent an email yesterday to see if errors were gone yet.

Car was never in an accident of any kind. After install of replacement ballasts, the hard errors that would show Warning Triangle on dash constantly were still present for 3 days. Now, I still get the Parking Light error/chime come up on dash when car is 1st started, then a couple minutes later, the Low Beam error/chime pops up, but unlike before, the error goes away, the Warning Triangle goes away, and there is no hard error stored under Check Control.

I'll give it a couple more days of driving to see if it gets any better, if not, I don't know where to go from there - other than coding out the fogs - which I really shouldn't have to do based on stated capabilities of the kit...

On the coding route, if I remember, the lines I'm looking for are:

Cold Check - KALTUEBERWACHUNG_NSW

Warm Check - WARMUEBERWACHUNG_NSW

Which module(s) are these located in?

Does this disable ALL cold/warm bulb checks, or just the fogs?

It's in FRM.

Go to the coding section and look for the values in the spreadsheet.

I think the values above are to disable the flickering you get with LEDs.

I disabled a different value for my fogs which still keeps the bulb check system but just doesn't show the error on my dash. My fogs bulbs are actually unplugged. I did a fog delete on my LCI msport bumper.

I had a similar situation as you when I made custom angel eyes. Since the logic board would dim the LEDs according to ambient light, the LED drivers would consume less power when they were dim so I would get errors.

Hmm. You really shouldnt need to code though. Did HPB offer to send you an set of error cancelers? Those are usually only needed for picky 06/07 models.

My gut instinct says there is a grounding problem thats why I was thinking the car might have been in an accident. Body shops are notorious for missing key grounds in the front and rear of the car and I've seen lighting go bananas because of it.

What I liked about the kit is how it actually matches the headlights beautifully!

I asked about getting the Error Cancellers - Fred stated that they would not work correctly with the CanBus ballasts since they already have the error cancelling circiutry built in to them.

I don't know how I could ground them any better other than running a line directly to a battery Ground point, as the ballasts are screwed to the frame rail and the Ground wire also screwed to frame rail...

If there is paint under the ground it might not be solid. That is the only thing I can think of.

OK, got the problem solved - kinda

Did an end run and coded out the fogs - many thanx to Grant @ DetailAdddict for pointing me in the direction of the exact codes I needed to change
