Modifications

What mods have people made and would recommend?

I have been looking through the BMW Performance brochure, but the only thing that is really jumping out at me is the exhaust system and I already have the black grill.

The only slight thing that is putting me off the exhaust system (apart from the cost) was seeing the pictures posted in another thread where they seemed to sit quite low and didnt quite look right.

Those mods that aren't OEM can increase your insurance premium, and might make the car difficult to sell on.
FWIW my view on the best mods I've done is as follows:
OEM mod = Alpine audio upgrade, good value and can be dealer fitted
Cheap (ish) reversible non-OEM mod = Evolve flash or JB4 piggyback
Wallet busting mod (but brilliant) = Quaife LSD

I really like my carbon-wrap interior trim mod too.

Mike.

I have seen alot being mentioned re the Alpine Audio Upgrade....where is the best place to source it from and any idea on cost?

To be honest, I think looks wise the car is almost there as it is, so just looking at the BMW Performance Exhaust and Diffuser.

Was just interested to see how mad or not people have gone.......

I phoned up BMW when enquiring about the Performance Diffuser and recall the cost for it to be supplied painted was circa £300-£350, but can take a few weeks to be delivered.

There's a massive sticky thread on this on the Technical page, I paid Barons Farnborough £450 fitted back in 2009, and I think that was good value.

As to how mad people go.........I've spent north of £6k on my 335. I know I'll never get that back, but I don't mind - it is a damned sight less than buying an M3 (I bet I end up getting one anyway though!). Plus I love planning mods and researching them.

How about smoked side repeaters, would look good on a black car, and will tie in nicely with your performance grill

Here they are fitted to my car

Nice touch...where did you purchase them from?

One very small mod I was thinking of doing that costs a couple of £'s was the LED rear number plate lights.

+1 for the Alpine audio upgrade. Anneka from Sytner occasionally runs group buys on this.

I had it in my last car and it was much better than the standard audio.

Only Mod worth having from BMW is the powerkit...but that weighs in at about £2.5-3K fitted when I checked with my dealer a few months ago, and it only adds 20BPH

I got a cheap diffuser and cheap spoiler off ebay, delivered and painted for half the price BMW charges....remember these are all just bits of painted plastic which add no performance to the car, so as long it looks good I'm happy

The LSD is defiantly worth it for the money, actually the cost of the LSD compared to the list price of the 335i actually make it quite good value. This is how I justified it too my self anyways .

I've also just picked up an intercooler and downpipes....really should be sensible and hold off till the warranty is expired before getting them installed but the temptation may be too much

After that it'll be an uprated oil cooler, and than finally the Birds suspension kit.....oh than theres always the BBK, exhaust back boxes...once I hit £6K spent on mods I'll stop, only problems is am already half way there and only had the car for 4 months, damn you BWM for making such a tuneable beast

LSD? Whats that stand for?

I liked the BMW Performance Exhaust idea cause it wont affect my BMW Warranty.

Lets you put the power down better when exiting corners...basically sends power to the wheel with most grip rather than just spinning up both wheels. Once installed its actually impossible to tell you have a LSD fitted on visual inspection, the diff housing is all sealed up

BMW now only fit M cars with a LSD, every one else has to make do with the DTC/DSC system where the car will brake the wheel which is losing grip as to avoid cutting power to the wheel with grip...essentially means every time you boot it out of a corner the dash lights up like a xmas tree

Quaiffe LSD is THE top mod for a performance car.

Unless you are a poseur, in which case you could have saved a few bob and bought a 320d.
