225M wheel owners with cracks

Hi all!!

my original thread has been turned into a big disscussion so i thought i start a new topic.

To those who had BMW replaced your cracked 225m wheelsby warranty.
was anyone told...

'' once the runflat has taken off we cannot re-fit them again and you cannot re-use it again?''

I got a phone call this morning that my new wheels are here but they insist i buy runflats from them at £390 a corner..until then the car is not driveable.

should bmw not cover the tyre cost if my wheels were crack by manufactering fault??

I would like to hear some real cases and if anyone had there tyres refitted by other bmw branch then i will start calling up and confrim the news.

thanks!!

How much are they charging per tyre...... It shouldn't matter what tyre is on, my local dealer was happy to fit non run flats

I had my tyre removed before I gave it to them and I'm picking up my replacement 225m wheel this weekend.

When I had the tyres removed by Costco, the guy who works there said that the stock RFTs tear very often near the bead. In fact I watched him do it and he tore one out of the four very slightly but since he was buying them he was trying hard not to!

Personally I would be pushing for RFT from BMW.

If they say know, either buy Runflats from another source like Ctyres - I have seen them there for circa £330 for the rears. Fronts cheaper obviously.

Or go the other way and move to Non RFT. I have just done that after 4 SETS of 19" wheels. Bought Hankook V12 for £180 a cornor.

Hi guys

Just a update with my claim process

I went into bmw this morning and ask about what options i have.

The problem : been told that they wont fit used tyres on new wheels for warranty claim on cracked 225m.

Tires condition are good , i have near 3mm across the tires , with the inside slighty lower.

So why should i change them when they still have life?

Thus i challenge the service guy...

I talk about let me have the "wheels boxed" same with a few member but the man say no.. Warranty claim on those wheels must be fitted by us.

I asked "isit ok if i being you tires to fit?" replied with "nope"

I then asked what can i do?

This is where it got interesting...

"sir for us to give the the tyres you need new tires .. So i suggest that you drive the car
And get the new tyres fitted on the cracked wheels and being it to us and we take the mew
Tyre off and put it on the new wheels"

Me:why can't i use my exisiting tyres!??

" you know how bad your tyres is sir? We wouldnt fit part worn tyres on. That is our rules and we need to follow it."

Me: isit ok i put some cheap tyres on and come bk?

"yes but you run the risk of mixing runflat tyres and it is not our responsilbilty if anythig happens.

Mek im thinking of gettig used tyres with 5-6mm thread on the crack wheels is that ok?

" yes, then we can just take it off and refit them on again."

Me

Sorry phone died just

Continuing my story

Me: so if I had tyres on from other garage it would be classified as used tyres and what you said about you won't refit used tyres on the rim? You're contradicting yourself . Well I just want my tires on my new alloys, I cant tell what the problem is with fitting my used tyre on my alloys.. my tyres legal right???

Guys walks in to speak to his tyre specialist... surprise then he told
Me he would fit them bk on for £20 pounds

So thanks for the useful advices on turing down on changing the brakes.

My total bill the repair bill was £20 instead of coming out £1200 for tyres and brakes

At the end of the day its all bullcrap.. just because I want some free work done I don't want to be paying for things that still have life left
the use of words like bad tyres, part worn. "There are reasons why bmw put these guild lines up" etc etc are used to scare customers and make make money..

Fyi I called up bmw uk regarding about the runflat can't be allowed to be refitted once it has come off.. bmw uk just say they don't make any rules but we back upnwhat your dealer wil tell you.... and I asked about alloy refurb from copper thamesnin kingston and they said they refit the tyre with no problem..

Yes indeed.

I got so annoyed with dealing the bullcrap from dealers I almost lost my cool.

But I can see from his eyes the service man was annoyed with me

I've just had a call from Sytner Sutton and they've only agreed to replace one of my wheels under warranty despite both rears being cracked. I'm going to get the results from the run out test on Wednesday and will take it up with BMW UK.

I'm very jealous that yours have been sorted without even testing.

And £330 for a rear tyre? I've got Michelin Supersports on my CSL 19" rears which cost £30 less than that and outperform them massively.

Have you asked if the reason they won't give you them in boxes is that they need your old wheels? Perhaps you can promise to return the old ones if that's what they are worried about - e.g with a £100 deposit or something. What proof exactly do they need to give BMW for a claim? It must just be the old wheel - all else is down to the dealer?

Still - 19" 225s are worth the cost & hassle - they look great

What tyres do you plan to put on? Seen some michelin pilot 255/30/19 for 239euros on offer here on pneus123.fr (£200) - was tempted but I still have 4-5mm left on the Falkens.

They said the reason was to make the warranty valid all work must be done BY BMW, i asked but he said there is no way they would let me take the wheel...

i've bought some vdrestien wintrac xtreme 19's for the winter , but i also got some 313m replica's recently so im currently deciding either use the 225m on winter tyres or keep the 225m on summer tyre and fit my new alloys with winter wheel til summer then change them around..dilema dilema

haha

Why? The vast majority of cracking issues have been with the 225's running on runflats

Choose another OEM 19" rim and ditch the runflats

Can these cracks be welded / repaired by a wheel refurb company? I know it's not a good option compared to replacement under warranty but surely better than buying new wheels.

well we have 335i , and if you think about it would you really want to travel 140mph on the private track knowing that your wheels has problems....

I guess you'd have to keep checking for cracks on a regular basis. I don't think I'd ever be happy driving on that private private track.

I'm concerned because early next year I will have first refusal to by a 335d which has the 19" 225 wheels with RFTs which were recently refurbed and had some cracks welded.

I'd fit non RFs - maybe best to replace with a set of CSL replicas or something at the same time, if they're any better?

Just be careful at mot time cos if detected the car will fail. Had my rear whirl replaced under warranty and they put my old tyres back on with no issues so it depends on the dealer I guess.

There is loads of cars running 19s these days with low profile tyres.

There is always going to be a small percentage of failures but there is clearly an issue with some BMW wheels that suggest the wheel manufacturer or design is the issue.

For all the arguments on this site for what a BMW has to have to be desired
I'd say 19" wheels feature close to the top. Nice big wheels make a huge difference to any car.
