Service cost and advice please

My 335D is due a service, its not been done for almost 2 years and has done 18000 miles since the last.

I rang BMW williams for a quote but they said it depends on what needs doing, then reeled off a list of amusing prices for things like £149 for vehicle check (nothing is replaced or changed) £140 for oil and filter change etc

They said I can check what needs doing myself via the OBC, can I do this without Idrive?

What do I actually need to have done by the dealer to satisfy my extended warranty conditions. If they said I needed new discs/pads could I refuse then get them done myself?

Many thanks

Dosent need to be a stealer to do this work to keep your warranty going. Just get the work done at a bmw independent at probably half the price! Im sure as long as the garage is vat registered and they use approved parts your fine.
If you started doing work yourself I'd imagine your warranty would be void.

Block Exemption Regulations

It doesn't even need to be a BMW specialist, though you would need to specify only genuine parts to be used and stick with exact grade and recommended lubricants. You could even buy the oil yourself, perhaps from opie oil (seems to come highly regarded by other forum members).

I usually phone a few dealers and negotiate on price of servicing, I have always managed to get the price down, my local dealer seem to have varying levels of discount. The dealers do offer a very convenient service in terms of their loaner cars, Rybrook, give them their due (I could tell stories otherwise) do competantly and efficiently perform servicing.

You mat lose any manufacturer 'goodwill', though I've never received any from BMW (though have significantly from Volvo). I'd be interested to hear other people's experiences in this respect.

Have a read about BER 'block exemption regulation' which was revised in 2002:

General opinion from people seems to be that if you want to keep the warranty 100% intact and without question, dealer only is the way to go. I got a new rear 19" alloy from BMW on goodwill (on a 4 year old car) because its a solid dealer only history.

I think the crux comes when you get something that goes wrong which is relevant to a serviced item. EG, an indy services it, it leaks oil, and you promptly get some sort of damage, BMW would possibly question whether or not the failure was caused by the indy, and would perhaps wriggle out of it, saying that the fault lies with the servicing, not the car itself.

If they do everything, then there's no arguing, and to be fair to them, they've never questioned any of the (numerous) issues on mine, they've just dealt with them. I think its always a bit cheeky to buy a car like a 335 and grumble about servicing costs, its not like its billed ot be a cheap runabout.

Should this make a difference? I suppose goodwill less likely, though still possible I should have thought....(as indicated by SelSol above) plus if there is any quibble on a warranty claim it may still be nullified if there is a wriggle room.

yeah extended warranty terms are set by BMW and they don't have to honour anything if you do not service it in the dealer network.. an arse, but fact.

could of course just not get the book stamped?

Thanks for the advice, as I feared BMW have us over a barrel with extended warranty.
