122+mph traps with 6at FBO+Procede Stg3 Aggressive Map

Just got back from my first day (with my 335) at the drag strip. Met up with Shiv and CupertinoSteve at Sacramento Raceway where we did some Rev3 Aggressive map testing/comparisons. CupertinoSteve's car is very similar to mine. Both are 6AT running FBO mods, MT street ETs on 17" rims, passenger seat out. But with the following differences:

1) CupertinoSteve has a Quaffe LSD with AR line lock... I have an open diff with no line lock.
2) He has a Procede Rev2 running 7-29maps... I have a Rev2.5 running the beta Aggressive maps.
3) He has progressive Snow meth kit. I have a Vishnu PWM meth kit.
4) He is fully catless.... I have high-flo secondary cats
5) He is running the 7-29 maps at 100% boost setting (20psi down to 18psi by 6000rpm... I'm running the beta Aggressive Stg3 map at 65-80% boost (17-19psi down to 16psi by 6000rpm).

Steve's car was cutting crazy good 60' times (1.6x second) and running consistent 11.5-11.6s @ 116-118mph. He was laughing at how slow the mph readings are now with the new timing system. His car used to run 122-123mph traps at the same ETs before they made the timing system changes a few months ago.

My car was cutting pretty mediocre 60' times (1.8-2.2) and running 11.7-12.5s @ 119-122+mph. I really think I need an LSD since my burn-out was only spinning 1 wheel most of the time!

I got 13 runs in. Many with literally no cool-down. I've listed the runs below along with the timestamp.

Time....ET@MPH.... 60' time (s)

91oct + Methanol
Default Stg3 map boost settings of 65%
17:20...12.224@120.560....2.023
17:29...12.512@119.351....2.173
17:44...11.937@120.103....1.770
17:55...12.220@119.694....1.975
18:50...12.058@118.645....2.020
19:44...11.728@118.841....1.876

Approx 97oct (added 5 gallons of 100oct) + Methanol
Boost setting raised to 75%
20:26...12.031@121.498....1.989
20:42...11.802@121.502....1.802
20:46...11.803@121.645....1.847
20:55...11.973@119.973....1.953 (I misshifted going into 3rd)
21:00...12.009@121.894....2.072 (too short burn out)
21:04...11.880@121.685....1.916
21:08...11.913@120.597....1.738 (misshifted again)
21:11...11.860@121.391....1.795
21:15...11.711@122.164....1.796

Some Observations

First few runs were sketchy. Was shifting too late which would cause the transmission to go flat between 1st and 2nd gear. Fixed by shifting manually out of 1st gear earlier. Still managed traps of 120+ on what is exactly my daily driving set-up (91oct+meth). I was really happy to see that especially given how conservatively sacramento raceway reads now.

After adding 5g of 100oct, I raised the boost setting by 10% as suggested by Shiv. And suddenly I picked up 1-2mph. I got better at launching/shifting too. My quickest and fastest run was my last run. Unfortunately, the closed the track a little early. The last 6 runs were all done with NO cool down (see time stamps above). As soon as I finished my run I ran again. Maybe some actual rest time would have resulted in an even better run but who knows. I'll be installing an LSD soon with the hopes of running the kind of 60' that CupertinoSteve is getting (1.6x). If I can manage that, my car could possibly run low 11.5/high 11.4s. And that is without resorting to super high boost levels. I have some logs which I'll post up later. At the higher boost setting, i saw a max of 18.5psi falling off to 16psi at 60000rpm.

1/8 mile traps were consistently in the 94-95mph range. CupertinoSteve's was in the 95-96mph range. But by the end of the 1/4 mile, my traps were almost always ~3mph higher than his. So the Rev2.5/PWM meth combo is doing something special in the higher gears. We noticed this the one time we raced against each other.

The new Aggressive maps+Rev2.5 definitely pull harder than the older Rev2 maps judging by how the two cars compared to each other. I know all cars are different but we were all pretty surprised to see such a difference between my car and Steve's car. Especially since his car is full catless and I'm still running secondaries. PWM vs PPS meth probably made a difference as well. It does look like Rev2.5 w/PWM meth is the magic combo. Everyone at the track was pretty stunned by how fast my car ran, run after run after run.

PWM meth rocks! Never had any problem or hiccup. Filled up at the track, did a 15 runs and probably wont have to fill up until next week. Its is a no brainer if you want a super fast car and not have to worry about failsafes, add on meth controllers or other external hardware. Integration is great and gives a real big peace of mind. I've run out of meth before on the street and the Procede drops boost/timing immediately and doesn't even hiccup.

I have a few logs which I'll try to post up tomorrow. Along with all my timeslips. Thanks for reading!

I don't really like the high boost spikes that occurs on each gear.
The boost curves are looking more like my old JB3 logs...

...and the knock on 4th gear doesn't look too good.

Hi Tom-- This is 6AT, not a 6MT like your car. 6ATs will always see a boost spike during the upshift. This is normal and happens when engine speed drops quicker than turbo shaft speed. The DME accounts for this which is why you see advance go negative during the upshift process. 6MT cars don't see this because they unload the engine completely during gearchange by closing the throttle (which discharges boost through the diverter valves). The only spike 6MTs see is during the throttle closure.

The knock retard at the top of 4th gear (~125mph) isn't ideal but pretty expected given the power the car is making on relatively low octane. I wouldn't consider it to be dangerous/damaging though. Some amount of reactive timing retard is to be expected on this platform when running things this hard. Eliminating knock retard completely while still making max power is going to be mutually exclusive for the most part. At least without running a much higher octane race fuel (MS109 or leaded fuels). That said, you will always see more knock retard at the drag strip than you would on the road during typical highway pulls all other things equal. Much more load/heat generated over a longer period of time of WOT. Most "street pulls" only last a few seconds. Not 12. Of course, being european, your mileage may vary

Can you explain to a noob where you see the knock events? Still don't know what to look for in these logs...

Thanks

There is one knock event where the red cursor is placed. Approx 6350rpm in 4th gear/~125mph. Knock events are identified by a sudden (nearly vertical) 3 degree drop in Ignition advance while not engaged in a gearchange or a traction control event.

Nice runs! 6AT owns the strip!

I'll have to try that +10% on race sometime.

Nice traps. May I ask how much 91oct was still in your tank before you topped up with 5gal of 100?

It looks like the 1/4 mile trap speeds are about right now. There used to be a 3.7 mph difference between Famoso and Sacramento! I always bring my Vbox to the track for comparisons. Did anyone bring one and do some comparisons last night?

It really makes sense though.

When your 60' times were similar to my 2.0 sec time, you ran:

12.031 at 121.498...1.989 60'
12.224 @ 120.560...2.023 60'

I ran:
11.7 at at 124.8mph...2.0 60'

On your first run if you had a 3mph better trap, you would probably have run the same 11.7 as I did.

On your 2nd run, if you had a 4mph better trap, you would have been right there around a 11.8.

So certainly doesn't seem like the traps are off if you correlate the 60' times, trap speeds, of what a typical 335i runs. Its pretty predicatable. Just look at the dragtimes listing, see how the 60' times and trap speeds equate to some fairly predictable ETs. When I ran a 11.12 at 129.5mph, with a 1.836 60' time, I knew that in order to hit 10's I will need to trap about about 1.4mph faster with the same 60' time, or improve my 60' time about .70 seconds, all things being equal. I know at this point, its unlikely I will magically find another 1.4mph, so I have to focus on traction. 10's are a given with traction. The Mustangs runs 10's at 123mph! If you look at the dragtime listings, the 335i BMWs with quicker ETs but slower traps, make up for it directly with their better 60' times. I can hit a 11.7 with a 2.0 60' time because my 124.8mph trap speed makes up for the mediocre 60' time.

However, when comparing your following runs:

19:44 11.728 at 118.841 (1.876)
21.15 11.711 at 122.164 (1.796)

It would be unusual to have a run with over a 3mph better trap, better 60' time, and only be .017 seconds quicker! So perhaps you remember something very different in those runs. Like you let off too early, shifted to early on the 1st run? I have even seen a difference on the Vbox between left/right lanes when I was up at Sacramento. (Again, another reason for bringing one). But all things being equal, it is usually pretty easy to correlate ET capability with your traps/60' times on the 335i.

Unfortunately although I tried to arrive to the track with an empty tank, I had filled up earlier that morning and still had nearly 100 miles left to go. So that should be around 4-5 gallons including reserve. Then i did 6 runs and that burned off another 1-2 gallon. So I probably had 3 gallons of 91 in there when I added 5 gallons of 100. So that's around 96-97oct. They don't sell race fuels at the track so that's all i could do. Next time I'll plan it better.

It really made a difference right away. I could tell immediately even before i got into 4rd gear that the car was pulling harder.

Just got my rev 2.5.
It will be very interesting to see if it cures my high RPM misfires which I'm suffering from sometimes.

The car will be punished up to 270 km/h (168 mph) during this weekend.
In other words, no wimpy 12 s runs...
