Oil consumption

As above, how much oil are you using?

I’m using about a quart every 4k miles, just trying to gauge how normal this is.

I know that there are a few oil consumption threads out there but just wanted to start a new one as some of us are now running more miles.

Mines now done 70k, and I’m running an Evolve stage 1 (370bhp)

Sounds normal to slightly lower than normal (i.e. better than your average oil consumption).

My old 335 was burning about a qt every 2k which seemed bad compared to what others on this forum stated. I took it in for service and mentioned it to them, bmw stated in spec oil consumption is 1 qt every 800-1000 miles . Yet an oil change is every 15k, how that makes sense I dont know lol.

My car had about 50k on it at that point.

That seems a little excessive to be burning 1qt per 1K. At that burn rate why even change the oil as you're constantly adding new oil LOL

Good to hear it's normal use...

Stil don't like the fact it still uses that much oil though when some use none.

Car runs 100% with no blue smoke so all must be good.

Mine showed a quart low at almost exactly 5k miles.

Holy Crap! You actually think using a Quart of Oil that fast is NORMAL!! I have not used ANY Oil in the last 10,000 Km, of which it has been a good mix of Mountain, Town and Autobahn driving so high speed, low speed crawl and spirited up and down the mountains,

I am totally amazed that this seems to be normal on your side of the pond.

Don't you have a diesel ? Everyone else that posted has an N54..it's not abnormal for FI cars to burn oil esp if driven hard.

12000 km and no oil added ever since i switched to GC aka castrol 0w30.

With oem oil half a quart every 12000km.

Car sees 40 km freeway travel at 140km/h. I remember with my e46 330ci zhp, when I used to live close to work i.e. driving 10 km round trip (no highway runs) I use to burn same amount as you.

That is bs. I was going through a quart every 1000 miles or so as well, it was bad enough that I just bought a case of oil. Took it to the dealer for my free scheduled oil change making no mention of the oil loss, and they found that the oil filter housing gasket was toast. They replaced that along with my water pump (I have never overheated or found any codes) and in 3000 HARD miles at 20 psi peak boost since, I haven't burned a drop of oil. Car had 25k miles on it when the oil filter gasket was replaced. Five stars for the dealer! They're awesome.

The oil filter gasket should be the first place you look.

Is that the gasket you replace at every oil change? Because if so, I just replaced mine lol

When i change my oil at 12,000km intervals i put in 7L and get out 5L. I know some is still staying in the engine, but i cant be burning that much oil.... i also never get a low oil sign on my idrive.

Hey Bud...

As I said in my original post, I know this has been discussed before. Just wanted to get a more up to date idea of normal consumption at higher miles as a few of us are now well over 60k.

This is hardly another ‘wastegate rattle’ or ‘HPFP’ thread that’s been done to death. It’s pretty clear in the subject line what the content is so if it bores you.

Thanks to all that have chipped in, I’m still not 100% happy that I’m using this level of oil when some are using none. Is it a simple case of some of us have drinkers and some don’t or is there an issue that needs to be addressed here.?

As I said, the car is running well and I don’t get any smoke out of the exhaust

Thanks for the input.

Pretty sure if i was losing a full litre of oil every 4k and it was leaking down the front of the engine from the oil filter gasket i would see or certainly smell burning oil when the engine is hot which i don't?

I noticed less oil consumption with Castrol Syntec 5w-30 compared to Mobil 1 0w-40 (both are BMW LL-01 approved).
