hit big pothole. many things broke :(

Hello this is my story of me breakin/bending my first rim in my life. Too bad it was on my e90

I was driving on the highway and coming up to a hill the car infront of me hits the pothole, I was very close and tried to dodge it but ended up hitting it.
It was loud, it hurt my soul, It felt as if I was shot by a 50 cal. (i'm exagerating but it really hurt)

Imediately I hear the clunk, clunk clunk noise and pull to the shoulder of the road. I inspect the tire and rim and eerything seems ok. I check the tire psi and see that it has dropped. Hop back on the car and then when I go to the menu for the low peassure indicator, the warning pops up. PSI was now arround 20.

I pushed the SOS button and they sent me a tow truck which drove me to the only official BMW dealer in Puerto Rico. I was about 38 mi and the tow truck took 1hr, 20 min to arrive. Then he left me at the BMW dealer.

BMW mechanic said I broke/bent my rim (new rim $543), bushings, guide support and the suspension bottle ($483). Also the caliper was hitting something and that was the clunk, clunk noise whenever your moved the car. Coming from the damaged tire of course (front passenger side).
Estimate: $2,400
I have stock 16" rims with RFT tires. No damage to the tire (he said).

So I am asking anyone who has had this awfull experience care to share some tips/ advice on the matter?

I have full coverage on my insurance but need to check if they cover this and to what extent.
I probably end up calling up a different mechanic than the BMW if the damage is not that bad.

estimate: (don't know 3/4 of the things listed here need to google the part number:

Some photos of hole:

Damn! Sorry to hear about this bud!!! Those roads look absolute rubbish!!! If we incurr damage to our road cars here, our local council picks up the bill!!! Well after all, we do pay road tax!

I would be pissed... hopefully you get it sorted asap

Good luck sorting that out. Hitting a big pothole like that is everyone's nightmare. Sorry it happened to you!

Is that the bride right after the Caguas toll?

I bent a rim in one of those bridges too. Too many holes. Avoided all but one.

thanks for your condolences guys. yeah roads here are like the surface of the moon :@.

@ vapore0n; it was near kilometer 32 in cayey on the south highway of Puerto Rico (PR-52). Maybe its the same you are referring but they are just to many potholes on the road to track all of them :P

Time to investigate those part numbers....

You may be able to get this paid for by the state or local government, whoever is responsible for maintaining the roads. Not sure in Puerto Rico though.

Supposedly you can claim something but it is a PITA and you have to wait months going from office to office and its just not worth it.

Sorry to see this, I hit one a couple of months ago and it only took out the RFT, go figure! Get an estimate from an indy shop if you can. At least the labor charge might be lower.

Holy shit. That hole doesn't even look that big, and it broke a 16" OEM rim?!?!?!

And of course the RFT survived lol

I hit a hole and bent two rims over the summer. Lucky for me I bought the tire protection for my run flats when I bought the car and they covered both rims and the front tire. Back tire was already worn too much for the coverage, but that's what 400+hp at the rear wheel gets me. haha. Good luck. I would contact the county or the state depending on who owns the roadway. They do have liability coverage that would cover it. Looks like you have a lot of good pictures of what caused the damage.

Imagine hitting that thing with sport suspension an 19" or larger rims...

The car would implode and you might not have survived.

That is serious damage, I thought your 16" would have absorbed it, contact the city's road department.

your experience actually reminded me of what happened to my left front rim that one day I was driving my car back to my place on the highway, and i believe I hit something during the trip with a "Pow" sound to my left front wheel and I didn't pay attention to it at first because I thought that was normal, and what happened was my left front tire's pressure kept going out after I came back, and I'll have to add pressure into it almost 3 times a day to keep it balanced!!

And then I have had the wheel took off and inpected I found there was a cracked point inside of the rim, it's not very big tho.. it resulted in the replacement of a new rim..

If you'd like to get OEM parts, you can save 2/3, like the guide support is $29 at pelicanparts.com . Also ecstuning.com .

You can get used 16" wheels all 4 for less than $500.

Good luck man!

Pm me I'll give you the number. If you need rims I have some 19 Csl I'm willing to sell. If I were you I'd check clasificadosonline. com or eBay.
