iDrive/Nav and iPhone 4
For all you guys that have the navigation package and the USB input, does your car support the iPhone 4 for music? All the previous generation iPods work (like my regular iPod 16gb) but for some reason, I have never been able to use the iPhone 4 and the dealer has no clue why.
I know you can use the auxiliary port for sound and the USB port for charging, but then that gets rid of the ability to use iDrive to pick songs/albums/etc. |

This question is in the wrong forum so you may find better answers over in the iDrive/Nav forum but...
I have had no problems using my iPhone 4S. I have a BMW cable the dealer gave me ($80 retail but cheaper on ebay); however, I was also able to pair it with bluetooth and still control it through the iDrive but not with as many functions available when using the Y cable that connects to the iPhone dock and then splits out to USB and 3.5mm jack which connect under the armrest. I was also able to connect it with just a standard apple USB/dock connector but the sound quality was no good so I am using the BMW Y cable described above. The best option is the $235 snap-in adapter to use with the iPod/USB adapter ($400 option 6FL) I also have BMW Apps ($250 option 6NR) but due to sticker shock of also having to purchase the separate iPhone 4 snap in adapter I have not yet tested the added level of integration that it is supposed to offer. |

With the loaners I've had with iDrive, my 4S has worked flawlessly, using my 6FL cable (I always bring it with me when I get a loaner).

I can get both my 4 and the wifes 4S to work using the USB cable. I don't do it often though. If I recall you need to plug it on and hit the music button on the phone for it to recognize it as an ipod. After that you should be able to drive everything through the idrive.
I'm just pissed that I still can't stream music through the the bluetooth using the iphone. I also don't like that the ipod out is only available using the cradle. I don't want to peel my phone out of an otterbox every time I plug it in. |

Ultimately I stopped doing that because every time my phone was plugged into the 6FL cable it would break the bluetooth pairing for music. It appears that iDrive will only allow one connection type per device. Ultimately I will breakdown and buy a snap-in adapter for my iPhone so I can take full advantage of all integration features. All I use is a Ghost Shield so no case hassles. I like living on the "iPhone 4s" edge. |

Thanks guys.. looks like I'll try the Bluetooth option. I dont have a cable (I've been reading up and it seems that theyre supposed to be included when you purchase the car, but I never got one) and I dont feel like shelling out $60 bucks.
Maybe Tischer will give me a cable if I ask nicely... I got my car from them and they never included one. |

I can use the stock Apple USB cable on mine. Your car must not have BMWApps or the combox coded for it. I'm not sure at what point the combox became standard. I've seen someone on here that offers that coding.

Mid September 2010 it became standard My iphone 4S works fine (mid sept 2010 build) for music/phone/bluetooth music with either Y cable or the Apple cable in the 6FL USB. For conveninece though, I leave a big ole Ipod Classic permanently plugged in for music and only take it out to update it. It's so much easier than plugging and unplugging everytime I get in my car.
