BMS Powerbox Installed!

Alright!!!!

After 3 hours of struggle, I managed to complete the pbx install.

The manual needs to fix a step where it says ---PBX yellow - pin 7 (white)---

THAT pin in actually white with yellow stripe on 09+ models I believe.

Additionally, the manual says:

"Slide the PBX white wire with female pin in the #29 slot until it clicks in to place.

Insert the yellow wire you just removed in to the PBX white female wire, completing the loop."

Here it should say white male wire, not female. I know, it's obvious but still.

For a rookie like me these two steps confused me a bit.

I also managed to break a clip on the smaller black sub connector, but it didn't do anything to the install except confuse me.

I inserted the large connector slider back in the wrong way, and didn't realize it til the end of the install. At this point I thought that the broken clip was the problem so I resorted to superglue in an attempt to fix it.

Car would crank but didn't start. So frustrated, I rechecked all connections and figured out that my stupid ass put the large connector slider back in the wrong way.

Fixed, and DONE!

I would watch these steps if anyone new is doing this install because it can get frustrating and back breaking. Lol. Everything else went smooth.

------------RESULTS---------------

AMAZING!

Took it out for a ride, got a 4X4 Error and a Brake error but they both went away after a few minutes.

LOVE what this tune did to the car. Simply amazing, no lag in the throttle, pulls harder, shifts smooth, the whole shebang.

The car was shaking when I first turned it on. Just raw! Especially because it's one of the only things us non-turbo guys have. Hah.

I would definitely recommend this tune to everyone with a N52!

Thanks for reading!

i posted a pic and update for some people later on in that DIY thread... I would be 100% sure that all your pins are in the right place because as far as i know, 06-10 models all have the same color wires. If you get error codes later on, you'll definitely know you clipped something in the wrong place... if everything runs fine and you test drove it, then i guess i just stand corrected. ^__^

I triple checked that it was the right pin. The car started and ran fine last night after I fixed the problem.

However, this morning I got the Service Engine Soon light and it won't go away.

Any ideas?

I'm going to check gas cap, but I know I did the whole installation correctly. I even checked it again.

Thanks!

Elaborate please? Sorry, I'm not at all experienced with this sort of stuff. Is there a way someone can code it out? Or if there is a real problem how would I figure it out?

The car is running just fine. I've changed maps to see if it would make a difference but it didn't do anything to the SES light. The site said to give the tune a couple days to adjust, so maybe I'll just try waiting it out rather than having to take apart the area to get to the ecu again?

When I did the system check it said, "Check OK."

Did the same install a couple of months ago and agree somewhat but mostly just follow the pin numbers and all is well. I also broke one plastic clip but no big deal. Just take your time and do everything step by step, don't rush it. I had no codes or problems with the install.

"Also, love what this tune did to the car"

To get your error checked, you can go to any place like Auto Zone or O'Reillys and they'll figure out what the problem is. If it's a "gas cap" issue, you can probably clear it right there. If it's anything out of the ordinary, i'd go through and redo the whole installation again from scratch.

As per my write-up, one of the connectors can get confusing as there is a "1" in the top left corner and a "1" at the lower right corner... so if you get these mixed up (like i did at first) it can cause problems.
If you're 100% sure you installed it correctly, then the errors should prove to be something else entirely - like air intake issue or whatever.

Here's a test for you though... try and go wide-open throttle a few times. If your car 'putters' and/or goes into LIMP mode, then you have connectors in the wrong places. If everything works fine and you take off into outer space then your engine codes are related to something else. ^__^ good luck!

I am 100% sure I did everything the way the guide instructed. The SES code is still up and it won't go away. It can't be any other issue because my car is well maintained and prior to this pbx mod everything ran perfect.

Maybe I'll try this week to take it out and reinstall it. But I am certain there is no issue with my car. The SES has to be related to this. But I can't seem to figure out why the code is being thrown. I've checked the connections over and over.

The one thing I was nervous about when I did mine was the part where you have to connect the BMS wires to the wires that were previously plugged into the connectors, and then tape them together. The connectors from the BMS that actually plug into the ECU connect very securely, but the male/female method of attaching the 2 wires, then taping them together, had me nervous that I would disconnect them and not know it with all the manipulation that is needed to get the ECU back into the sockets after the wiring is complete. I think I did mine correctly because I didn't get any errors and the car responds great to the chip. I wonder if you might have had something come loose at that part of the procedure.

That's a possibility, however, the tune is working perfectly. The only thing is the SES light won't go away. If a connection was loose wouldn't I encounter more problems like the car not starting?

Additionally. Is there a certain way you have to connect the male and female connectors? Because I was just sliding the male one into the female one and taping them off. There should be no reason for a faulty connection.

Like I said, I had no SES light after the install. It came on the next morning.

In the instructions it talked about joining the male/female part at an angle to make sure there was a good connection. I found this to be true, if you just put the 2 together straight on it seemed like they could come apart easy. If Burger is reading this, that is one thing I would improve about the product.

Could you use shrink tubing instead of the electrical tape on the wires? I would think that would work better and make the install look more professional. Just a thought.

Taping male and female contacts together? That's asking for trouble.

That is a deal breaker for me. Those contacts are designed to fit in a connector and be properly mated to another, ensuring proper contact, throughout wirring harnes manipulation, weather and vibration.

Electrical taping them together is a form of ghetto engineering that doesn't belong in a car.

Hey guys, sorry I haven't been on here in a while. I still haven't had time get back into the ecu, and the SES light is still on. Car runs fine.

I'm planning on getting in there this week to resolve it. If not, I'll be removing the PBX indefinitely and moving on with my life. Lol.

Btw, the taping idea was off the PBX guide, not my own.

+1 on the heat shrink. In all seriousness do you think that it is worth the money for this device. I really want to kill the lag in my 2011 E90 328xi saloon and I would like to have a bit more power to go with it.

Thanks
