Just a minor rant...about Boston roads
Boston roads and OCD don't make a good combination.
In 2 years of owning the car, I've had 3 tire replacements and fixed 3 bent rims (OEM 193M). I drive my car almost daily, albeit short distances, but it is hard to remember a time where I drove from point A to point B without coming across a section of road being worked on. I hate the anticipation and cringing before going over a pothole so large and in a section of the road so crowded that there is no avoiding it. I hate gripping my steering wheel ever so tightly as I hear that loud BANG. I hate the fear of noticing my headlights pointing straight up or down from dislodging the auto-leveling mechanism. And lastly, I've become so paranoid that every time the car chimes (and that is quite often lately due to the temperature), I fear for a low tire pressure warning... END OF RANT...sorry guys...just venting... ***OT*** My Exotics Tuning lip has minor fracture marks propagating all over from the rapid temperature change

I hear you. I have had 3 bubbles and 1 cracked rim so far. I haven't changed my tires with recent bubbles and still have another hair line crack on rim. I plan to run it till tires are completely worn out or they go flat. I haven't had any issues with my winter setup which means I should ditch RFT for next change.

All but one of my rims was destroyed the first 2 weeks of having them on the car. The roads are pretty terrible but you just have to learn to watch for everything.

I'm very much considering inventing the "rear high beam" for just this situation. A LED array aimed about average driver level when 5 feet behind my bumper. SHAZAM...and they are blind. |

Had my e90 in Boston for 2.5 years. With summer and winter rims, I have 7 out of 8 bent. I've also had 2 RFTs bubble. The leveling sensor had to be replaced a week after I bought my car (used). I cringe the same way you do whenever I drive.
All of that in less than 5k miles per year. |

Yeah, the roads here suck and public works does NOT care at all. You can report potholes to your local city and they will get fixed, but by then it's too late.
It almost makes me want to get an SUV and forget all about it. :-(

We choose to live here...and with that, we have to cope with insufferable road conditions. Nothing we can do, but to grab our ankles and bite our lips! I totaled my previous Audi on Cambridge roads, so I know the agony well. I'd rather be the jerk taking his time around potholes than the one paying for replacement parts and BMW labor rates.

What about getting a Euro switch and using the rear fogs? Those things are bright and should do that trick.

I have that but my car is lower so it doesn't really work unless the car behind me is as low as mine

Haha you guys are funny. Here's some NYC stats.
My GF's Mazda 3 has a little over 8000 miles We're on 3rd tire now. One punctured, two had bubbles bigger than my ass. One rim is bent without chances of fixing it, no bad vibrations from it though. On my own car in 1.5 years of ownership I cracked both rear 189 rims and put bubbles on 4 RFT and 2 non-RFT tires. |

even local dealerships know the deal around here. Last time i took my car in for service, the SA called me with an update and listed all the warranty work they will be doing and at the end he's like: "oh yea, we noticed a bubble in your front RFT and that all 4 of your rims are bent in some way, but we didnt want to make a big deal about it because we know your car is from brooklyn and we see this on every NYC car."

Curious as to what brand tires you guys are running? Conti's have some thin sidewalls, which result in frequent bubbles in the sidewalls. Do you guys have any road hazard warranties on the tires?

I have the Conti DWS tires, purchased from Direct Tire with price matching to tirerack.com, also had the road hazard added from Direct Tire. Already made use of that twice.
