Wheel and tire package insurance?
Is the wheel and tire package offered through BMW worth it? It\'s an 09 328xi sport with the 18 in wheel upgrades. I think they are 196 wheels. The dealer wants 2k for the insurance which seems like a lot however those wheels seem very expensive as well. I live in new England so they roads have lots of pot holes and the car has brand new RFT tires on it which I will use until they wear out then go to non RFT

See if you can negotiate down. They initially wanted to charge me close to $2,000 for the same package on my 2011 328xi, but I was reluctant and ready to move on before they offered it again, this time at $900. Since I was financing, they rolled this cost into my loan and after doing some calculations, I determined it was worth it since a new tire could set you back $400-500 easily.
At roughly $16/month, if I have a flat anytime in the first two and half years, this policy has paid for itself. I also know that I likely will only have this car for 3-4 years, so it's worth the piece of mind knowing that I am not out of pocket for a large sum should I have an issue (a very real possibility in Chicago where we have two seasons: winter and construction.) Also, the manager offering this told me that the same insurance package will have a $100 deductible in 2012, which seems to suggest to me that this policy is taken advantage of enough times to eat into the dealership's operating costs (I also believe he said that the rate of usage is around 65% or so.) And if you ever feel like you don't want to keep paying the monthly "premium", you can just sell it back at a prorated amount. |

Quick question, did you take delivery of your vehicle? I was under the impression that insurance policy could only be bought at the time you take your car. Once you drive off the lot, you can't buy it anymore.

Yes, it was at the same time as when I took delivery. However, I am pretty sure this is something that you can add after the fact. At least, that's the impression I got from the manager when he was telling me about the changes to the policy in 2012 (deductible, at least at my dealership) and why it'd be better to get it now. I could be mistaken so I would definitely verify that.
