E92 335D Gearbox oil change?

I have done a bit of searching for the above as my 335D has reached the 100k mark I plan on keeping the car for a long time and read that to pro long the auto box to change the oil even though these are meant to be sealed for life.

From what I gather the oil required is shell m1375.4 and is rebranded as zf lifeguard.

I have requested a price from Anneka@sytner who has quoted around £200 for oil alone.

Is there anyone else I can get this specific type of oil from or complete kit?

Also what else is needed apart from the oil to carry out this maintenance? Ive read I need a new sump as it includes a filter?

Hmmm, listening with interest - mine will hit 100k by summer and I want to have this done too. Cheaper to change the oil than change the gearbox, right?

I have seen an older version when a collegue stripped one.
The oil galleries are immensely complex
There was a strainer in there, and you would need a gasket set too, IIRC.

Are you sure you want to mess in there? If working okay I would leave well alone

I wouldnt do it myself and I wouldnt know the techy know how to but would get a specialist to do it

But also I am a firm believer if it aint broken dont fix it lol

I had my 335d gearbox oil changed at a respected independent here in Essex, all in cost was around £480, oil is very expensive as you already know and the filter is also close to £200. Mine was done at 50,000 miles, oil was black and smelt horrible (Burnt type smell). The gearbox was much smoother and more responsive after so seemed well worthwhile doing.

If you decide to get it done make sure the people doing it are going to let it drain overnight, apparently letting the last 10 - 20% drain takes ages.

Seeing as ZF now sell a kit for this gearbox I cant see how it would be an issue changing it??

Thanks for that link, I will read that in detail when I get home. I have got BMW extended warranty so if anything should happen, would it be covered or is this one of the service items that bmw will say becuase of the milege of the car? I cant seem to find it anywhere in my manual to say this?

Likewise, that's way beyond my driveway spannering comfort zone.

But, gearbox oil change is preventative maintenance, just like an engine oil change. I'd rather spend a couple of hundred to change it than a couple of thousand if the 'box gives up.

Well there are two ways you can go about a transmission fluid change as far as what you'll need. One is the basics, just change the fluid put on a new drain plug with sealing washer and a new fill plug with sealing washer. The more in depth method isn't that crazy, it's just a little more in depth changing the filter as well. We have some kits for the 335d that put the parts together for you, they can be found HERE.

sorry I missed this thread to update, yes i did get this done. i brought the meyle filter kit with 7 litres of oil (above link)and got it done by my specialist. the oil that came out smelt very burnt and had a burnt tinge - I have a sample of oil in a bottle which I can post up a picture if you want to see the comparison. Also changed the mechatronics sleave

After the oil change the gearbox felt much crisp when changing up and down the gears and responsive. Prior to the fluid change I felt like on cold starts the gearbox was slipping/holding onto the revs longer - I know as part of the cold warm up procedure the gearbox holds onto the gears longer to warm up quicker but this felt like when a clutch in a mnaul is going and you get a lot of clutch slip

I would highly reccomend changing the gearbox oil around the 100k mark as by looking/smelling the oil that came out at 115k defo is not lifetime oil

i also changed the diff oil whiile i was there and it took about 1,4 litres to change.

sorry for bad pic as this is the only one I have at the moment - bottle on the left is the gearbox oil, bottle on the right is diff oil



if anybody is intrested this what the underside of the gearbox looks like -


mechatronics sleave - the rubber o ring that tends to leak but to get to this the sump has to come off and drop the oil so i replaced it while I was there (old one had no signs of leaking)


The magnets inside the sump - not too bad and a smidge of sludge no metal filings which was a good sign

Mike miller recommends the ATF change every 60k, but i feel like doing mine sooner. From your feedback i should think i'll get improvements!

Do you think its worth asking the dealer to do it under warranty? They believe nothing mechanically is wrong, and its hard to argue with idiots who won't listen! I'm thinking i might have a chance, as on real oem there is an official BMW ATF change kit.

How much was the labour, if you don't mind?

This is the kit that I got, but I got the Meyle fluid not the febi -

You can ask a dealer but I think they be very reluctant to do the change due to the cost however on the flip side if its being done under warranty the extended warranty should cover it and dealer will just get paid out.

I have had conversations with the service manager at one dealership who asked me why I want to get itchanged as its lifetime - my repsonse was was peace of mind and no fluid is lifetime. The manager did say its not something they do everyday because the cost of the oil and was reluctant to give me a price knowing how much it would cost. I was fair enough but then I did say ZF manufacture these boxes and I presume BMW do buy the oil from them then why do the official ZF website reccomend oil change at 70k miles? I thnk then the light went off in his head ahd he ust nodded and agreed but as usual he was spouting the "BMW" line...

I just thought for my peace of mind Ill get my specialist to change it - I think he charged me £80-£90 in labour and I supplied the kit from that link above.

Plus my specialist had said he had fitted the same meyle kit to a e60 3 days ago and as soon as he saw the box he said I wont have any issues as he has good feedback about meyle

ring up eurocarparts and get the original zf kit which includes the zf fluid.

We do shed loads of the things there are 2 model types from ZF that you'll get from Euro's part number 50411059K is for the GHP26/8 series, while 50411058K is for the GHP19/21 series.

Price will 100% depend on the day you enquire on line(always on line-click/collect)if you go over the counter you'll pay a different price.

When you do the service (instructions provided in the ZF box)once done you're not quite there and that's where DIY'ers may come a tad unstuck as you really need to re set the gear box adaptations and with most of the BMW's if you have the options re set the engine adaptations too(quite a few of the diesels won't allow you to re set the engine adaptations)once the adaptations are re set you need to allow the gearbox to re learn its way so to speak. Takes approx. 40-60 miles from my experience to get thing sin to shape IMO.

Re software updates if you're going the whole hog this helps a lot too. Many posts re gear box software updates therefore won't go into it here but combined with the sump/fluid/adaptation reset which I've done make a real difference and your fuel economy will be better too

Te kits a basic/full ZF kit meaning required oil filter sump assembly and sleeve plug.
