one of my co-workers that is originally from a European country says i should be putting in some Injector cleaner in my engine once in awhile due to the fact that the diesel here is \'not too good\' although I\'m pretty sure bmw recommends not using any additives. has anyone any knowledge about this?

The diesel here isn't good since the switch to ULSD due to BS EPA regulations. Injectors should be the least of your worries with ULSD. Lubricity or lack thereof is the concern. Use quality fuels sold by reputable stations/companies e.g. Shell, Chevron etc.

I use Diesel Kleen w/cetane boost by Power Service, which provides added lubricity and a pop in the cetane count. It's DPF safe. There are a few other products that provide more lubricity, e.g. OptiLube, but you can't buy them at AutoZone

No car manufacturer recommends using another companies product esp an additive, when they haven't tested it and there isn't anything in it for them. However, here's how hipocritical BMW is; BMW sells a gasoline fuel additive at their dealerships; it's Techron re-packaged in a bottle with the BMW name, which sells for a 25% mark-up.

gasoline and diesel are different animals. You need a SYNTHETIC diesel fuel additive, not something petrolium based. If you had a dirty pool would you but a splash of clean water in it? or would you use chloriene...

Dont waste your time w/ Power service, lucas, or any of these off the shelf brands. my 2 Cents

Euro diesel is higher quality in terms of having lower sulfur, higher cetane, better lubricity.

There are a ton of diesel additives out there which improve on one or more of those attributes ( i.e. cetane, lubricity, cold start properties)s.
There isn't one "best additive" but they all use well known diesel fuel additive technology. Don't listen to Total Power. He doesn't know what he's talking about.

This is like asking people how you should break a new engine in... you are going to get lots of opinions with a few facts to support/discredit both sides of the story and ultimately end up more confused than you were when you asked what you thought would be a simple question.

If you want to use an additive I'd say use the proper amount to treat a full tanks worth and use it all the time. If you think it has some benefit your car needs it doesn't make any sense to only use it sometimes.

I mean I leases this car probably to buy, but now I'm re thinking about buying out my first diesel being my lack of knowledge on the engine. I think I'll spend 3 yrs with this gem and if they offer an f30 335d perhaps I will rethink it

Redline, Amsoil, Lucas, Motul, also sell diesel fuel additives. I can't figure out why Chevron doesn't make their Techron-D available for retail.

Interesting note. My BIL is a long haul trucker and has over 450,000 miles on the original injectors and fuel pump. So much for the "bad" U.S. ULSD.

He has only used PS White bottle a couple if times when he had a run into the North Midwest from the Southeast. He was afraid his N Fla diesel was going to gel him in Wisconsin.

you know chevron with TECHRON and shell VPOWER and all those are additives? do you go to mom and pop's gas stations where they don't add additives and gas is cheaper? Do you go to chevron and say, premium, hold the techron please....

All diesel has additives added to it at distribution centers, e.g. cetane improvers, additives to improve the wear scar (add lubricity), cleaners, and in some locations at certain times of the year anti-gel additives just to name a few. From my perspective, complimenting a pre-existing lubricity additive with an over-the-counter lubricity additive in order to further reduce the wear scar score (HFRR score) is a good thing.

FWIW, all current BMW gas/diesel caps say "no additives." This absolves BMW from liability or providing warranty coverage if a custoemr uses a product that has not been tested/vetted by BMW if it is determined the additive directly caused damage that would necessitate repairs. Despite BMW's stance on the matter and as I mentioned above BMW dealers still sell a gasoline additive (Techron) wrapped in a pretty BMW label. I guess when they make money on a product it is okay.

I meant additives from a bottle. I get my diesel from Quicktrip. I'm sure it has additives.

I put 2-stroke motor oil 1/2 quart in my duramax every tank. I put 8oz of opti-lube in the D every tank. There are way too many reports of pre-mature fuel systems failures in diesels since the mandatory switch to ULSD. There was an independent test done "google it" that should you everything you need to know. Then you can decide what the best bang for your buck. I, personally, have moved away from powerservice because of this report.

i hate to be the negative guy in all these posts, but clearly none of you guys look at the msds before you buy shit.

Optilube is Naphta, benze, and other known carcinogens. Not only will it raise your cylinder temps, scorch your pistons, but it's terrible to burn health wise.

Napthalene is found in diesel fuel, so I am not sure I understand what you are trying to say.
