Hi,
I want to install a GPS system in my new car (non-idrive). Can those of you out there with a GPS aftermarket system please post where and how it was installed?

I would like to know a better mounting method, but for now, this is the setup for my Nuvi.

I have the same Nuvi (660) that we use in our non-iDrive car. I use the windshield mount (best) or the dash mount (sandbag) for it. Your 660 should have come with the windshield mount.

yeah, windshield mount is probably best. I'd actually put it in the driver side corner rather than the middle to avoid blocking field of vision.

Either way you're blocking some amount of your field of vision. It sits low enough (if you mount it that way) so it is not blocking much. The dash mount sandbag is even less obtrusive.

I don't use any mount for my Nuvi, just put it in the pocket behind the gear shift. Works great.

It would suck if I looked at the screen all of the time, but it talks to me. Or the voices in my head know where I am going...
Will the windshield mount handle spirited driving? I had used the suction cup feature when I had a 328i sedan loaner. I was able to attach it to the trim near the vents. Worked fairly well for me. The coupe trim is too curved to allow the suction cup to work for me. I am not a big fan of blocking the windshield, but I guess I should give it a try. Thanx. |

If you google "GPS mounts" there are dozens of companies that make specific mounts for your car.
There is a company called "RAM" that makes a GPS that place a mount right on your dash by using a very thin clamp that goes onto your wood or aluminum trim. It is a special kit just for BMW. They have others that will allow you to mount on the vents or on top of the dash using velcro or low tack tape. That said, I like the creative use of the cup holder! |

I don't need one, I have a map of Ohio imprinted in my brain from driving around wayyyy too much.
Kidding, I have a TomTom which when used in my BMW I just mount it to the window with the suction cup. Although I hardly ever use it in my BMW since I don't normally go places that I don't already know where I'm going in it.

Nice! I've been thinking about doing the same, but with 6MT, I fear it's going to interfere too much with shifting.

TomTom One with modified Brodit proclip+mount.
See this thread for more details. I've since updated it with a powered mount, neatly hiding away the 12V cable. |
