335I OEM control arms question.

I just replaced my Oem Upper and lower control arms, with Meyle HD's. I'm at 89,000 miles. I replaced them mostly because I had a clunking noise which I was sure were from the control arms. It turned out to be my front sway bars, which were not bolted down, after my recent water pump/thermostat change.

My question, is, at 89,000 miles, is it possible to reuse my oem's? Can one change out the bushings, for instance, and reuse these at all, or should I just ditch them?

Thanks

There is a replacement rubber bushing available for the OEM control arms that can be swapped. Look at realoem.com. But only for the rubber end, not for the hydraulic end (as far as I could see at realoem).

What are your driving impressions on the Meyle HD ?

The Meyle HD's are very good. Tightens up the steering, and is very smooth over bumps. I wanted the tight road feel of the M3, without the negative camber, that will kill my tires. So far, so good. I'm now going to order meyle HD tie rod ends.

Worldpac, a national OE and OEM parts supplier stopped carrying Meyle parts due to poor quality. Some guys have had luck, many others report early failure of balljoint parts (wear, play, breakage!) and cracked/torn rubber bushings. I had Meyle rubber subframe bushings on my E28 M5 that were torn severely after only 20k miles. I've also had to replace a lot of Meyle brand parts on customer cars that come in from other shops. YMMV, some people have had Meyle parts last a long time, others not so much.

For all race, track, and street customers alike, I only recommend Lemforder, Sachs/Boge, TRW, and original BMW (made by one of these three) parts only. Quality control and overall part quality, fit, finish, and durability is better on these brands.

After reading all the stuff you wrote in my water pump/thermostat thread, I decided, not to pay any more attention to anything that you write.

Ask me whether I care. I was simply stating that a national parts supply company decided to pull them due to poor quality and a high rate of returns / warranty work. I have confirmed this phenomenon personally, as have other BMW shops and racers.

Guy, I'm not new @ internet forums. You fit the Troll profile perfectly. Sexually frustrated male age: 18-35, always drops into posts with the intent of drawing all attention solely to himself. You recently dropped into our forums, and have been randomly posting information, anytime someone asks for technical advise. We are supposed to believe that you are some kind of experienced BMW tech, with loads of time on hand to give free advise on the net? Sorry but reading your responses, You can't even fake experience.

To answer your Troll Post, FYI, lemforder manufactured our lame OEM control arms, which we've all seen burst and leak fluids at only a little after 60K miles. Sachs/borge apparently made our lame ass stock shocks. Mine were done at only 50K miles!

Meyle HD is for heavy duty applications. They identified the weak points of the OEM product, and have made specific reinforcements:

Several of our members are using their control arms, all with positive results. This is the type of evidence we go by around here, not Troll hear say

btw, still waiting for my wax thermostat to "fail open", without any codes. Even though there are 3 codes for thermostat failure, which mysteriously, I can't find.

Dude, please get a date.

Believe what you want. I understand the marketing behind Meyle parts, but as I stated earlier, they are hit-or-miss when it comes to durability in the real world.

And you have no idea who I am or what I know. I don't give a shit what you think about me, I know I'm smarter than you from your lack of understanding you've made very clear. I do have years of experience, and I have seen a lot if problems and good working parts. If you are so arrogant you can't hear any kind of criticism or counterpoint, then I hope you have a good life, because you're handicapping yourself in more than just this tiny little aspect of life - cars that is.
