335i steering pedals

guys, just a quick question for owners with steering wheel gear pedals.

Would you say this is a must have option if I am looking to pick up a second hand 335i. I'm just not sure how much and in what sort of driving people use the pedals.

I only ask because there is a well priced car but doesnt have pedals. Now I can pay extra for another car (like $55k vs around $60k)

Its a well priced car with low kms and one owner....just no pedals on the wheel.

this is a dream car buy situation here so I dont want to have any regrets after.

You can retrofit a wheel with paddles for about 600 to 700, depending on the type of wheel and paddles (e.g., an m3 wheel with DCT paddles is going for about 550; add a burger tuning retrofit harness about 180). So I reckon going with the one without paddles and fit a wheel with paddles still saves you a few $ks.

Hey Tintin,
As mentioned you can have them fitted so it’s not a make or break IMO.

I don’t have paddles, on my e92 and to be honest with you I don’t know if I would use them if I had them. Even on my Basin runs though mountain hwy with its sharp corners I am very happy to use the shifter while I am in DS.

So for me it’s not a big thing. I am only thinking of putting them in latter on for resale purposes. (still unsure about that) The Steptronic dose a great job of shifting in drive so only time I feel I need to shift is when I am in DS with the tune pedal on.

I say if it’s your dream car grab it and have them fitted if you feel the need, but it’s your call, just make sure you have this car properly checked out, good luck hope it works out.

Cheers,

the paddle shifters are nice... but sometimes I even prefer using the manual shifter because I can 'pretend' its more like a manual car

definitely not a deal breaker.

paddles can be retrofitted for as little as $800 installed including brand new M3 wheel with DCT paddles.

I love using my paddles, if I didn't have them I'd definitely look to get them in

Stu's helped a couple of forum members with the install (dang, why aren't you in Melbourne?!?). He's still got a wheel with paddles available (I think) and also has a custom harness so you may want to PM him for details.

Awesome!!! You da man! Though I'm not sure I can wait that long to fit the wheel, but if things don't work out will definitely take you up on that offer. I'll email you again about getting your custom made harness - wheel should be arriving anytime soon.

Okay, back to the OP's thread topic, don't wanna

I'm not sure if you realise this but the 335s come in a DCT and non DCT (automatic/torque converter) version, as well as the manual gear shift.

The DCT come standard with the paddles and the non DCTs were an option earlier on I believe (may be a standard on recent cars). The difference is the 7 vs 6 speed and the double clutch. You can tell the difference by the actual gear knob/stick and to an extent the paddles (unless these have been changed).

Personally I rarely use the paddle shifts. Just occasionally when I need to quickly downshift to accelerate or feeling a bit naughty and what to hear the engine blip from a downshift. The main difference is the engineering, the speed and smoothness of the automatic-manual gear box.

I have a E92 335 DCT with paddles and find them better than the gear stick in manual mode, EXCEPT when cornering hard in which case the stick seems to be easier since it's not moving !

but seeing as the paddles move with the wheel shouldn't both hands be on the wheel, i.e. not hard at all?

And if the steering is turned too much for the paddle, there's still the stick to change gears

The M3 or the 135 DCT stick?

M3 sounds like it can and requires a harness it seems - http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=302091

I've only seen a 135 stick retrofit install on an e46 (do a search) - I wasn't sure if the guy got the process down as he was making educated guesses to to the wiring connections.

Some other links that may be useful:

you need this to retrofit it properly.

http://www.motivemods.com/category-s/307.htm

Then you would need to cut a bit of the stalk to make it fit.

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...=gear+retrofit

a lot of info on this thread.

IMO I would go for the M Shifter as that doesn't require any sort of cutting of your stalk.

Replied to your pm mate. Happy to provide advise (can't help yet as I haven't done the retrofit myself), just picked up my e90 last month.

Thanks mate, appreciate the quick reply.

Any ideas how difficult the retrofit is from investigations? Not the best with these sort of things.

You also have the option of the pre-LCI or LCI shifters. The old ones are pull to change up and push to change down but both sides do the same. In the LCI, a push or pull on the right changes up, and a push or pull on the left changes down. The LCI is probably more natural or instincitve but the pre-LCI means you can change up or down with only one hand on the wheel.
