Should my dealer of updated my CIC harddrive based satnav when I bought the car? If not how much is the update?

In answer to the first question - not if you didn't insist on it as part of the 'deal'.

In answer to the second question - Prices vary and I think in order to benefit from the features of the latest disc such as 7 digit post code search, would also need a software update, but work on the basis of about £250.

You can buy the disc and DIY which will work out cheaper, but don't know if you can do that if the car needs a software upgrade too.

I'll drop Anneka at Syntner a PM to see if she can post a response with a Forum price.

Mike, back in the day, Soper BMW use to update all the used cars to the latest software as part of the vehilce prep.

These days, alas, they have gone to the dogs under the current managerial team....they're more focused on selling units than customer satisfaction

I've just had my oil service done there, last Wednesday, and I requested a full software update .... The technician working on my car came out to qualify my reasons as to why I wanted the software update as he didn't want me to be wasting my money (my cars out of warranty)
I duly gave him my reasons ... He was happy, when I collected my car later that day it was spot on
Ready, washed, chamoised, hoovered, service book stamped, waiting to go....

Ref prices, I can't quote for them, and can't give you the price I charged, as I'm in the trade so I benefit from discounts, but if you speak to Lauren on service, tell them Tom with the black 335d I'm Lincoln sent you to them I'm sure she will look after you on the price

Hey Tom, Astle's is literally a 5 minute drive from me! funny how I'm in good ol GY and bought from Lincoln and your in Lincoln and use Astles! I'll pop in and ask, I need to see if having bought the car from Lincoln it has to be Sopers who do warranty work etc, the steering doesn't feel quite right to me, bit vague when at centre and tramlines a fair bit (possibly track rod ends?) . Is lauren the hot on by the way!

Has anyone done this, I have a 2009 cic system is it worth the costs of taking it to a dealer.

Also how do you get the DVD play to work in Motion, I have a 4 y/o and it would make traveling sooo much easier!

The hard-drive version is much harder to pirate than the DVD version. On the DVD version you just need the latest map DVD or a copy thereof. On the HDD version you copy from a DVD onto the HDD but you need an unlock code from your dealer which is tied to your chassis number. There are some dodgy sellers selling the unlock code but I don't know if they work or not.

If the algorithm for unlocking the licence is now public, which I believe it is, then it can indeed be pirated with a keygen crack.

I don't either - but the sheer greed of BMW (when you can get lifetime updates 4 times a year for you Garmin for £60) makes this totally justifiable in my eyes.

Is that for the HDD (CIC) system though? You wouldn't need to change the DVD on the HDD based system.

Yes, according to the application list.

Reading up on this, the pirates can supply the discs fairly cheap or even free for download yourself, then you burn onto DVD or onto USB sticks.
Then the cost is for the code to activate the update. This code is specific to the year of update and to the car's VIN, so it cannot be reused on someone else's car (whereas the discs can be reused).
Codes can be had for anywhere between 60 euros and 100 dollars. There seems to be a small band of "trusted" (!) pirates that can email the codes to you - after you've paid by Paypal or similar.

People who have gone the pirate route - apologies if anyone is offended by the term - have updated from 2008 direct to 2012, adding the 7 character postcode facility. There have been instances of update failure, usually fixed by rebooting the Nav (holding the volume button pressed for more than 20 seconds). Occasionally with problems on early CIC versions where the nav fails to update properly and needs a dealer update.

DVD updates seem to take about 3 hours to do, with the ignition on, but you can interrupt the update, so you can do it in a series of commutes (or a blast up country). Using a USB stick (in the glovebox port) reduces the time to about 45 minutes, but some people have had problems with early CIC's again, and have reverted to DVD.

Saw on one thread that an individual had got the part number of the discs and got them from his local dealer for £22, with the proviso that they wouldn't have them back if they didn't work. He got a code from the pirates and was successful in upgrading.

Might we have a case of approaching Anneka for discount on these????

Thanks for all the research and links. The 'honest' £179 update to DIY does sound a little more reasonable, but from my digging, this won't give you 7 digit post code search unless you also have a software update done by a dealer.

I don't have the IT savvy or confidence to go down the pirate route (arrrrr). I think I will renew my interactive link for another year instead. Google maps send to car is more useful as a post code search, particularly as I now have an ap on my phone for this and I do use the other features from time to time. The maps themselves are not such an issue and Google is more up to date for new addresses.

Yes, noticed the dates would include the CIC units, but what's that about the should it be necessary to change a disc - that for the update?

Was under the impression the HDD based system uses Sat Nav "Premium", not "Professional"...

It also mentions "CCC" on the description.

I've downloaded the maps and will be buying a code soon to try this all out. At around 60 euro, it's far cheaper than going to the stealers.
