New to Modding

Hi All,

So I now have a new 2011 335i x-drive sedan. I've had it for almost a year now, and am thinking about modding it. Though, I'm kind of lost on what I should do. This is my first BMW and haven't really modded anything before.

One of my main concerns is the 4yr/50k warranty. It seems tuning seems to be a good area to start as the posts on this forum sounds like you can relatively easily cover it up when taking it to the dealer (i.e. putting it to stock map or manually disconnecting everything and somehow clearing codes).

The most popular tuning seems to be the JB. I'm not really sure what the differences are between the JB2-4 stage1 & 2. Would it require additional modifications?

I don't think I have any intention of tracking it, although, I don't want to eliminate that possibility either. I would like to see some more 'umph.'

I took a glance at the dyno graphs, and it seems that the gains start to appear around the 40-50mph mark (or maybe i'm not reading them correctly). Does that mean it'll feel the same for the low end acceleration (i.e. 0-40mph range)?

Any thoughts, advice, etc would be much appreciated!

Thanks!

First mod for me was to purchase kw v1s to lower the car... It will be lowered in a few weeks... The next one is either Cobb when available or Dinan. Once you get the mod bog you won't stop lol.. So far I painted the calipers, front lip, winter tires Blizzak ws60s with 10 mm spacers, will go to 19 inch stance rims in spring and roll fenders...

Oh, forgot to mention get rit of your run flats.

Go for the JB Stage 2 first. You will feel the most gratification from it. The difference between Stage 1 and Stage 2 is that Stage 2 handles boost much better and has CAN integration...which means added features such as deleting/reading codes, on the fly map switching, DP fix, etc. It does not require additional modifications but additional modifications require it.

If you plan to add additional modifications such as a DP, JB Stage 2 is the way to go.

The dyno graphs aren't based on MPH but rather RPM.

I would also remove the RFT's too asap. I still haven't. I even haven't driven a BMW without RFT's, So I'm in for a surprise when I get RE-11's in March.

Thanks for the posts.

I've been wanting to get rid of the RFTs... but what do you do if you actually get a flat? There is no space to carry a spare with you...

It seems that N55 JB Stage2 is a good starting point for biggest gains with minimal cost. As per the site, there is a BMS USB Combo deal. Anyone know what that is used for?

Also, if you guys have an estimated cost on the mods you did, that would be helpful. It makes it easier to compare what kind of benefits you get versus how much you need to put down.

Thanks again!

EDIT:
Also, is there any harm doing the JB4 (stage 2)? Does it damage anything?

Yes getting rid of the run flats is a good idea. One of the best moves you can make. As for tune the JB Stage2 is very popular, with a simple install and all the dash features the N54 JB4 is famous for

Mike,

I have a 2011 (N55), so I don't think the N54 would work on it (correct me if I'm wrong).

BTW, is there any risk (either during install or when running it) on the car itself with the JB3?

I would agree with everyone. The nice thing about JB4 Stage II is that it has the can tool, for your future DP, if you decide to choose. Anyways, Good luck.
PS Get rid of your RFTs

For people who don't use RFTs, do they ever carry a spare with them? Or they just never get flats?

Usually don't carry spares. I just have to carry a fifth wheel in the garage.

The tune does not damage anything unless you're running a map without the supporting mods. There is room for a spare under the trunk cover I thought...The USB enables you to connect the tune to the laptop and log the car. VERY useful to diagnose a problem. I would certainly get it.
