Tire Manufacturing Date

Hi,

Is there a way to find out when the tire was manufactured? Also, how old should the tire be when you're purchasing it?

I'm getting a good deal on Hankook's that were manufactured (per the seller) in 11th and 12th week of 2011 (Not sure why it doesn't say month - but that would make it March). I would buy them now, mounted and balanced, but won't be on the car till April or May. With that said, they are supposed to be brand new just from last year's clearance.

Is it okay to buy those?

Thanks!

tires are stamped with a 4 digit code which the first two are the week and the 2nd two are the year.

you should be OK to buy the tires.

1111 or 1211 is what it should say if those dates are correct. and yeah you'll be fine with it being only a year old, but i would still double check the rubber condition all around.

Anything in the past three years of production would be considered by most to be fresh. Tires have very long shelf lives when stored in warehouses out of direct sunlight.

Thanks Gary. I needed some more input as I was confused whether a year old tires are okay to buy.

Usually when tire rack sells tires, do you know how long ago they were manufactured?

In the fifteen years I've been doing this, I have yet to ever see or hear directly from a customer or colleague of *any* tire ever failing due to age. So, I can't say with confidence that even a ten year old tire would be unsafe.

Tires more than 5-7 years old will have rubber compounds that are starting to get hard enough that will have less grip, but I have not heard of or seen any tire fail due to age. Would I race on the track on 7 year old tires? Probably not. Would I drive on a street tire that is 7 years old. Probably would, especially if the tire or vehicle has been kept indoors out of direct sunlight for much of that time (such as tires in a warehouse, winter tires stored most of the year, garage queen vehicle, etc.)

It's up to the individual to buy such an old tires ... per say.

Hot weather = extreme heat built up inside an aged tire ...
