LSD for Aggressive Daily Driver
Had a question on which LSD would be best suited for an e90 '09 335i that's mainly going to be used as a daily driver. I'm an aggressive driver and will be tracking it on occasions but I wanted to know the opinions of those that are in a similar situation as I am or that have any knowledge the could help me decide. Right now I am modding the car in stages. The first stage will be suspension, brakes, wheels, and LSD. Pretty much have my mind set on everything with the exception of LSD since I have little to no knowledge on them what so ever. Any help will be appreciated!
(P.S - Sorry in advanced if there is a thread out there on this. Wasn't able to find it in any of my searches) |

You can't go wrong with either Wavetrac or Quaiffe. I think a deciding factor is price point and Torsen vs clutch based LSD. I was told OS Giken will join the e9X LSD market soon.

Well you are modding your car in the correct order

LSD is needed on a stock car, much less modded.
Quaife is a great choice. OS Giken is as well - we carry both, but the Quaife is very affordable compared to the OSG. And the OSG does require a rebuild every so often.... However it is a lot more customizable.

I did three things to deal with traction issues: 1) Wavetrack LSD, 2) proper tires (Michelin Super Sports) and 3) traction control feature in the Procede.
Even running 18psi of boost with meth injection, it is very difficult to get wheel spin....straight line or in corners. Launching the car WOT in 1st gear just makes me silly with laughter. It took all 3 of these things to get traction issues under control. Initially when I had the LSD installed with crappy tires (Nitto Invos) and without the Procede traction control feature dialed in, I was very disappointed. The LSD alone didn't help as much as I would have thought so just keep that in mind.

^ I had the exact same situation as LB, even down to the tires used. Tires make a world of difference. The LSD will make the traction issues more predictible, however, with your stock engine performance it's not as big as an issue with guys who are FBO +.

ever since i got spun out while accelerating going out of a turn, i've been very throttle shy. it was pouring rain and i was testing my summer tires (in the middle of nowhere, but still embarassing)
my rear always try to slide off. will LSD helps this or it's just a case of bad tires/suspension? |

I've had my Wavetrac for over a year now and I love it. Worth every penny I paid and one of the best mods I have ever put on the car. My car rarely sees the track, I am just an aggressive driver and it makes the car 10 fold more predictable and fun.
Just my $.02

The LSD isn't going to completely eliminate it but it will make things more predictable and therefore controllable.
I just put a Wavetrac in but I haven't really pushed it yet. I am currently running RE760s so nothing special. The car does seem a lot more stable and planted. I added KW Series 1 coilovers first, then did a Quaife LSD. In between I junked the RFT's and went to Michelin Pilot Sports. I never see the traction control lights anymore, other than for justt a bit if I get on it on a wet road. Very happy with the mods, may upgrade further but I'm very happy with the results for now.
I would like to find a way to keep from burniing through rear tires, but I think I would have to change my driving habits.

For those that have installed their LSD, did anyone end up changing to m3 rear subframe bushings and sway bar at the same time? I would imagine the rear stability would be vastly greater and wouldn't think twice about pairing these upgrades together.

that should be done anyway for stability, huge difference especially if you like the twisties.

What I do know from experience is that the LSD greatly increases overall grip of the rear end, with all the consequences this implies: understeer in corners is corrected (and OVER-corrected many times), also the take-off is much improved.
