Tyre speed ratings
I'd earlier forgot what my tyre pressures should be when doing my 2 weekly pressure check and checked the sticker in the front door. It only refers to Y and W rated tyres. Does this mean my current V rated winter tyres are not suitable for this car and would this then have implications with insurance?
Thanks |

Possibly, my winter are W rated for that reason. (vred wintrac extreme).
That means that the only type approved ratings for your car are Y & W, so you should only fit those or better. Check the ABI guidance on winters. (great list this) http://www.abi.org.uk/Information/Co...mmittment.aspx Seems to say they must be fitted in accordance with manufacturers specs etc etc.... The manual lists V rated and H rated as options for various sizes. I don't see an issue as long as you are not regular doing over 150mph, which is what V rated specifies.

Great list, thanks.
The BMW handbook under the winter tyres section states "if the car is capable of speeds higher than that permitted for the winter tyres a label stating the maximum permitted speed must be displayed in your field of view". I think I'll email the insurer for piece of mind. |

Are you sure there is no V rated option for your model? For the 330d there is a V rated winter tyre listed on the door plate. I run the exact same 'V' specification as the door plate, but not in RFT.
Insurance are normally interested in the fact you comply with the rating for the car, (or better) as on the plate. HighlandPete |
