How hard is it to change a tie rod end?

Good morning everyone,

My car is at BMW right now and I got a call stating that my tie rod end was wearing down. They said that the cost to change it and do an alignment would be $650 plus tax. I'm just wondering how difficult of a job it would to do by myself and realistically how much would an independent shop charge to change one. Thanks!

Inner or outter? Inner is a little more involved as it requires a specific tool to complete the job. But that price is ridiculous. If you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself get prices from a local mechanic. Its a common part they change all the time.

If it's the outer...it's pretty easy. I did mine last year. The key is to have a jack to apply load on your suspension before you tighten the bolts.

hit up sal@autocouture or matt@autocouture they will get it done way cheaper then the stealership!
I just had this done by them on my 135i. Big difference in steering response and road feel, assuming you upgrade to ///M ones. Price difference is very little if any.
