Headlight Alignment

Just wondering how easy it is to adjust the Headlight alignment on an E92? 3 Series Coupe?

Getting they seem slightly too high and i've had the odd person flash me thinking i have my full beams on.

Cheers

Andy

Take it to an MOT station and get it done properly mate. 'roughly' done jobs are often badly out, all over the place and dazzle oncomers. Wont cost much and will be done spot on

As the e92 has xenonx, and therefore auto-levelling, there's a chance that the plastic ball-joint on one of the levelling potentiometers on the suspension arm has popped off or broken.

Maybe... mine had frozen solid with corrosion, a new assembly was only about a tenner.

There are manual 'zero' adjusters you can tweak until you get it aligned properly.

Face up to a wall about 5m away with lamps on and mark the top of the beam on the wall.

The adjusters are obvious black plastic knurled knobs with big allen key holes in the right above the headlights.
Lift to bonnet and take a look.

Turn them clockwise a few turns with a hex key, and you'll see the beam top line drop on the wall.
These adjusters do NOT affect left/right aim so its quite easy to get them about right.

Steve.

Thanks for the advice, i've seen them auto levelling when i switch on the lights so wasn't sure if there was a way to adjust them through the menu system.

I think part of the issue is the Zenons are so bright

Will be due MOT soon anyway so will get it checked then

Interesting. I think my headlights aim far too low on my e92. Was also going to try the manual adjustment but now I'm thinking I may have an issue with the auto levelling feature. I don't see the up/down motion when I turn my lights on.

What's weird is that the car just flew through MOT. Do they not check height? Just left/right aim and pattern?

Not near the car unfortunately man.
They are pretty obvious though, theres only one black plastic knob with a 5 or 6mm Hex Key slot in the top on each of the lights (under the hood, near the bonnet catchers)

I don't recall which way you need to turn them.

Wait until dark and park about 6 feet from a wall with the dipped lamps on.
Maybe make a mark on the wall where the flat tops of the beams are.
Adjust one about two full turns at a time and see which way it goes on the wall - you can always turn it right back again

A couple of inches down on the wall at 6ft is probably enough.
