1 Series Spied

I recently came across an article in Autoweek regarding the upcoming USA introduction to the BMW 1 series. Does anyone know what engine options will be made available?

Damn here comes the wannabe posers who just buy cars for the badge to run in and scoop the 1 series up. With any luck the 1 series will bomb, like the hatchback entry level mercedes benz C-Class.

Sources suggest 130i and 135i in the USA

1 Series is a very good car

On par with the 3 Series, just smaller
They even share a number of parts

I would have no problem with the 1 Series if it was priced similarily to the 3 series, but in reality we know that is a fallacy. It will be priced thousands less than the 3 series.

Thats because its a smaller car

Its like saying the 3 series should be priced like the 5 Series

LOL...says the dude with a 3-Series..the current "poser-mobile" in the BMW line-up.

If you think no one buys a 3-Series for the badge, you must be on crack.

I would love to be able to get one of these--the coupe of course. I don't need all the space I have in my E92--and would love something a little smaller and "purer". I am not in the age group they reference in this article (I am 28) but I really like the idea and look of this car.

And, the 135 would be a f*cking rocket!!!!

Once this car comes out and it looks half decent, a boatload of people that are buying civic SI, TSX, etc. will come looking and return home with signed contracts.

Mini Cooper seems like such a better idea.

I actually like the Minis- they're cool.
However, the 1 series was created, IMO, to lure people away the competition so that BMW can get a bigger piece of the pie. A buyer could spend $25k on a Mini but it'd still be a Mini (although made by BMW). Then some else comes a long and spend about as much for a BMW. Noticed how makers such as Acura are making cars that cost about the same as a Honda?

plus the 1 is RWD and will have a speedometer smaller then 8" in diameter

i love the mini, but it's got some quirkiness for the sake of quirkiness, the 1 should be more businesslike inside

I see the 1 Series as a GTI/A3 competitor (all over Atlanta), and with the x35i engine a fierce competitor. It also won't carry as much bloat as the 3 Series and probably result in a more tossable car with better power/weight trade-off. I think they'll sell like hotcakes for both badge and enthusiast purposes.

I cant wait this will be a car for a true entusiast. The price is going to be good also so it should be a ton of fun for a good price.

The 1 Series will not bomb. And it'll be brilliant, especially the 135i, which will do 0-60 in 4.5 seconds according to the latest Car& Driver (think worlds busiest traction control system).

Honestly, this car is very close to the spirit of the e21. And with the N54 in it...good gawd!!

I have no doubt they'll be a long and protracted 'PROceed 1 Series vs 3 Series' war on this site. And the 08 M3-ers will chime in too. I can't wait!!

Long Live

I have heard that USA will get a 3.0 liter 262hp engine variant in the 1-series and also a detuned version of the 3.0 liter twin-turbo motor from the 335i. Supposedly it would be detuned to roughly 290 hp.

There have also been much more intersting rumours of an 'M' Version that would run an all-new 3.0 liter, high-revving, natually aspirated straight-six engine packing something like 315hp - 340hp. It may or may not be called the M1.

I am hoping that history repeats itself and that BMW Canada somehow gets models that guys stateside don't and that Canada receives the hatchback models!!!!! A 3-door hatchback M1 would be freakin' amazing!

i don't get this argument. so you demand a lower-class vehicle to be as expensive as its big brother?

i've never heard anyone say this before, "i like the car, damn, if only it were more expensive!"
