Should I back out of an ordered car?
In May, I ordered a 328xi, and it is now on its way across the Atlantic. I got what I thought was a fair price, but it had been nagging me, and I wondered if I got the best price. So I took my deal to another dealer and asked if they could have done any better. They said they could take $30 a month of my payment.
I took that back to the dealer that took my order, and they offered to take $20 off. They didn't match, but on the other hand, they did have my car already finished with production they expect the car to be delivered in about 2 weeks - if I bagged the deal, I'd have to start all over and wait another 45 days at least. So I agreed to the new monthly payment. I explained that to the new dealer, and he said he doesn't like to lose, and could take another $35 off. So now, they've offered a $65 lower payment from what I thought was ok to begin with. Ok - now for the kicker - my original payment was $498. The new dealer is saying he could get me a $435 payment. I think that is just insane. The way I figure it (with a lease calculator, not in my head), if he gave me the car for invoice, it would be around $420!! At this point, I feel - I don't know - rude, somehow, going back to my original dealer and saying this other dealer can get me this insane payment, what are you going to do about it. Am I crazy?

Did the mileage per year change with the new payment? Sounds odd that the one dealer is so close to invoice though maybe he is willing to do that just to get a deal that he would not be able to get. Better to win a little than lose the whole thing.
Personally, do what is best for you. Don't regret what you buy/lease. If you can handle waiting and you wish to save a few bucks than cancel.

Are you sure the second dealer isn't screwing you some other way? cause I have a hard time seeing him selling you a car below invoice; I personally wouldn't mess around, you already got a bit of discount from the first dealer and I would rather have the car now as opposed to wait another 2 months ... just my $0.02

be very wary. If for whatever reason you choose to back off your current order, make sure you have a contract or something written on a piece of paper from the NEW dealer that will guarantee you the payment quoted.

You should have negotiated all of this in the beginning. It's not very ethical and cool to cancel your original order. The dealer didnt do anything wrong, and in the end you agreed to it. I highly doubt the 2nd dealer is going to come off $65 a month. If you are thinking about it, have him give you the entire breakdown of how he is arriving at that payment. Is there a bigger downpayment? Uses of MSD's? Lower mileage? Sounds shady to me. If the 2nd dealer first offered you $30 off then another $35 because "he didnt want to lose"...that would make me very suspicious. Nobody works for free and no sales manager is going to allow a CA to give a car away becaise the CA tells him "I dont want to lose". I mean come on!

I know the OP said $65 but I wonder if they meant that they will take $35 off instead of $30. In other words: another $35 was meant to be taken off of the Original quote- not $30 and ANOTHER $35. Just a thought.

I also agree that it somehow feels unethical on my part - one reason I am struggling. On the other hand, the dealer is a stranger to me, and I don't owe him anything, and it is my money. If it wasn't a dilemna, I wouldn't have posted it here! ![]() Thanks for your opinions!

Like I said, it seems very strange he would go down $65...I would get it in writing and then post the numbers onm here. There may be something hidden somewhere. |

Ok. Turns out the second dealer was full of crap with his second number (-$65). When I pressed him on it he admitted that he had stripped all profit out of the numbers, and that that wasn't realistic.
So I am sticking with the original dealer. Thanks for listening, and adding your input. - msc
