Local Indy shop - Central PA
Looking for a good indy shop in my arae - Located in the lancaster/harrisburg/york areas.
I know of one - Swedish Motors http://www.swedishmotors.com/minibmw-service.asp I have NEVER delt with these guys - so if anyone has, please chime in. Looking to NOT have to drive all the way to Philly or Baltimore just for an inspection or oil change. I do have 2 local BMW dealers in my area - but im talking an Indy shop, not the Stealerships. Thanks!

I can't say enough good things about Mount Joy Auto Works. My family and I have been going there since I got my first car, almost 15 years ago. The owner, Tony, is the most honest mechanic you'll meet. I started going there when I didn't know how to change my own oil, and I have progressed to timing belts, water pumps, axles and suspensions. He knows me well enough that if he thinks I can fix something he'll ask if I want to do it before he does. He has been so good that my parents buy him Christmas gifts, even though our only connection is that he fixes our cars.

Does Mount Joy Autoworks specialize in european cars? ... or? Do you have a BMW? Your sig. says you have an Acura TL? I'm not saying that is not a good place - but am looking for a BMW-specifc shop.... perhaps if you have a phone number I can give them a call and find out. I'm worried about an "honest" mechanic that is for sure, but almost more importantly, is the ability to work on and know about NEWER BMW's. I know some Indy shops can work on older BMWs no problem, but when it comes to computer programming, coding, etc, some Indy's run into problems. Not saying you are wrong, but I need to do my homework. I plan on using whatever Indy I find for YEARS to come - barring I run into no problems with the one I choose.

Only met one other guy in the area - was going to buy wheels from him. haven't really seen anyone else from the area on these forums. Do you take your car to Faulkner at all? I didn't get my car there (bought from FL bmw dealer) but have taken my car to Faulkner with some pretty good results. However I am not trying to take my car there for simple things like inspection and oil, obviously... hopefully together we can find a good indy to take our cars too!

They do not specialize is Eurpoean cars. My recommendation was based on your initial requirements of oil changes and inspections. If you want coding you'll have to ask them, 717-653-8870, because I don't own a BMW yet. Faulkner BMW is looking for a 335 with my requirements, which is why I'm here. I have also never heard anything bad about Swedish Motors, other than they can be pricy. I don't have first hand experience, but I've owned 2 Volvos so I heard about them through the grapevine.

I do want an Indy shop for simple things like oil, inspection, but also to also to be able to use them if I need brakes, engine work, etc done as I will probably need in the coming years of owning my car. That is why Im looking for an Indy that is a little more in depth with BMWs... on another note.. I had Faulkner, along with the BMW dealer in York, look for a black on black 3-series for me. I didn't care if it was a 328 or 335 (as ridiculous as that may sound) but HAD to have a car that was: RWD, sport package, premium package, Black exterior, Black interior, I wanted a manual but would have "settled" for a automatic even though now i am 100000x more happy I found one that is manual and NOT automatic... but I went to both dealers, and told them EXACTLY what I was looking for and even said, you find me the car, I'll sign papers TODAY. .... 2 months later, i was fed up. They would call and saw I have this "red..." and I would cut him off and say, I dont want a red or silver or blue, etc car. They were trying to SELL me something after I told them exactly what I wanted. I hopped on BMW's website and search the ENTIRE usa for a black/black CPO 3-series that met my criteria... know how many I found? 2. thats right, 2. One was in AZ, the other in FL. the one in AZ was automatic but had idrive, the FL one was manual and no idrive and had adapative headlights - about everything else was the same - even mileage. after a quick phone, some overnighted papers, and a call to a transportation service... I had an 18-wheeler show up at my work comeplete empty with the exception and a beautiful black on black 3-series. ... sorry for the long story, but seems you may be in a similiar boat. Faulkner seems like a bunch of good guys though - no BS with them. I am younger (25) and didn't feel "out of place" when looking at $40,000 cars - even though I pulled up (the first time) in my grandpa's minivan (my previous car was totalled which made me in the market for my BMW )

Well I would trust them for everything you mentioned, but it seems like almost everything you do to new BMWs requires resetting some computer so that may not be a capability they have. I would recommend at least calling them and asking these questions.
The guy at Faulkner who I have been working with has been pretty good so far. He told me he can get cars from other dealers, and search the BMW lease return auctions. However, 2 weeks ago I told him about a car I found in Pittsburgh and he keeps saying the dealer out there won't give him an answer on wholesaling it to him. The car has been on the lot almost 2 months and they just reduced the price so I don't want to miss it if he's just being lazy. I'm tempted to call the dealer directly, but I would prefer going through Faulkner because they're local. Anyway, I hope they come through and I can avoid your experience. |

I'm from Elizabethtown originally and my family and I have always gone to Jack's Auto and Aero in Bainbridge. He only works on BMWs and has always done dealership quality work for a fair price. He's the only guy that I'll take my car to. Even though I'm living 45 minutes away now, I still take my e90 to him (Sun Motors is across the street from where I work). Jack's Auto & Aero 231 Race St Bainbridge, PA 17502 717-426-2336 For those of you up my way, there's also Bavarian Select Auto in Mechanicsburg. http://www.bavarianselect.com/home.aspx Now that I've divulged all of my secrets, who wants to sell me some 18" wheels?!? |

Awesome, more Lancaster people ha. But, you know what, now that you mention that spot I remember someone telling me there was a "BMW place in bainbridge" ...I kind of found that hard to believe considering that area, ha, but I am very local to that location - probably less than a 15 min drive up river road. ...and any of you guys running 19s? I am incredibly scared to run 19s but know they look 100x better... I have 2 sets of wheels form 2 different people on possible buys - one 19s, the other 18s, both black with polished lip... Mini-Lanc meet sometime when it gets nice!

Jack really is a good guy and runs a really nice shop. As for the wheels, I'm just trying to get something besides my stock 16s. I'd love a set of 189s or 199s. |

Guys go to mechanicsburg sports car in mechanicsburg and speak to Todd. Or go to bavarian select auto in mechanicsburg and speak to Andy. They both have done aftermarket suspension, engine work, swaps etc. They r great shops. I would be down for a meet to I'm right near carslile pike.
