Santa Pod - Sat 14th April
Any takers?
Ran 13.0 last time, I'm so close to the 12's I can almost taste it I fancy another trip before I put the 19"s back on for summer. |

Great day today all round for me.. Met up around 10:30am with our man Boz and after having a perv round each others cars we got signed on and headed for the queue..
Morning started off as usual with the track being very cold and slippery with both me & Boz struggling with traction. Tried many different launching techniques with my 'new DIY Launch Control' and started the day with a 13.5.. As the runs went by though the times started to tumble with a 13.3, 13.1, then 13.0, so was slowly getting there. After lunch, me and Boz both got back in the queue and carried on our pursuit for the 12's and once the track had been exposed to the sun for a good while the track temps started to lift and grip got better and better. Next run resulted in much more grip and a 12.8 @ 110.6mph (2.2 60ft) This then resulted in my being told I now needed a helmet, so a trip to the Pod shop and £40 lighter I was kitted up and ready to roll. Afternoon got better and better with some good runs against a C63 AMG (level pegging the whole way), a (what looked like) a modded 335d and smoked many tuned Astra VXR's etc. Then had my best launch of the day by far (2.0 60ft) and the car hooked up like an absolute biatch - at which point I thought to myself "this is the one".. This was however short lived though, as I didn't realise that I had the gearbox in S and not M which meant an automatic upshift followed by my manual upshift and the car went straight from 1st to 3rd . The run was STILL a 12.8, but kicked myself for the remainder of the day about what could have been, but hey ho.. Anyway, towards the end of the day I managed to chuck in a couple of 12.7's with a best of 12.76 @ 111.1mph and a 12.75 @ 110.1mph.. All in all pretty happy with the results and certainly shocked a few people when they asked me what I had done to the car.. List of runs here.. Couple of vids.. Me vs Boz (Was a lot closer than the vid looks to be fair) Me vs 335d I'm sure Boz will be along later with his results, but he did have a fuel handicap due to being caught short and having to run 95ron.. Nice to meet you though mate and you are definitely a drag whore |

Cheers Carl.. Was hoping you might of shown your face mate.. You run the M3 yet?
The 335d is the last run on the sheet mate, 13.7 @ 103.37.. Either an incredibly quick stock one, or a modest mapped one. |

Nice writeup and the DCT is pretty impressive. Anyone in a 6MT needs a bit more power to keep up with that. |

Good to meet up with you Ben
Managed a 13.1 in the end at about 108. Wasn't expecting too much on the day. I could only get shell 95 as they had run out of vpower 98 when I filled up. I was surprised that I actually noticed the difference. Also, that's definitely the last run out on the run flats, they're getting a bit worn down now. Excuses aside, on a positive note our cars were neck and neck once up and running, which encourages me to go get some decent rubber so I can get those 60fts down. Oh, and I smoked Puff daddy in his M3 both times, the man who was too cool to acknowledge anyone around him. |

One of those 12s runs you did, I was waiting behind you on the line. You did look to get an aggressive, but smooth start with no smoke/very little spin. It's trying to get that start is the secret, the rest is the easy bit. |

From my own experience alot are poorly driven and do 13.5-13.7 etc. My friend has a modded one and has done a 13.0. He also said he has a friend who did 13.0 stock. Amazing if true.

New rubber and decent fuel next time Boz and I'm sure you'll be smashing the 12's bud. Give me a shout when you're next going and I may join you . Sounds like Phil is game too (not running against him though ).. BMW show should be a good day.. Quote:
13.0 flat does sound very very optimistic, but a lot will depend on tyres tbh. If any are run on super sticky rubber then times can tumble rapidly.. But IMO unless you have a proper set up drag car, I don't see the point in sticking slicks or semi slicks on a road car that you use daily. Just not a true reflection off the car's road performance in my eyes. Loads of people told me to sticks some semi slicks on some spare wheels when I ran my Golf, but where do you stop?!?! I prefer to jump in my car in the morning, take it to the strip, run it, then go home and it then be ready to do 200 miles for work in the next day without changing a thing (other than to wipe the number of the back window )... You are bang right about the M3 having to be driven hard (like any other high powered rev-happy engine). Seen so many threads on forums of people banging on about mothering an M3 when they just shouldn't have. That car in the wrong hands can be a serious amount slower (same with the Honda Type R range). I will be interested to see how you get on with yours in stock form Carl, as I know it will be driven right.. Just no cheating with the rubber.. |

Again many people cannot maximise these cars. I was never beaten at Pod in the 335d by a E92 M3, I've only ever heard of one which did 12.8. Most are anywhere between a low 13 and a 14.
Ben yeah, apparently that 13.0 was on standard rubber but who knows. I will be happy with a 13.2-13.3 in all honesty! Quote:

Got a mag (review) here of a E46 M3 doing a 13.3 standard but by 140mph had pulled 1.5 seconds away from B5 RS4 (even though the Audi smoked
It to 60) and 5 seconds quicker than R34 GT-R to 140mph.

Are autos (normal - not DCT) still slower than manuals these days?
For example, if you take a 335i or 330d and compared manual box and auto box times, would the manual be quicker (if driven well)? The manufacturers figures suggest the autos are a tad slower (not DCT), but is this really the case down the strip? |

If you look at our American friends then most of their top ten (1/4 leader board) consist of Steptronic cars compared with manual. They do seem to be a lot easier to launch than the manuals, especially when brake boosting etc..
