335i Sound!

I’ve had my car now for 2 weeks and am absolutely loving it and especially the soundtrack!

I have to say though my favourite sound is when I flick the paddle into 1st just above 20mph as I’m slowing down to a standstill – the grumble and pop followed by the deep tone of engine decelleration sounds amazing!

If you haven’t already done this, open your windows and do it without delay

I've not done that yet, is that the one in the rear light cluster area? Is that known as the golf tee mod? What does it actually do?

It leaves the nearside exhaust flap open all the time, instead of it shutting under ecu control to quiet down the note at certain times. It makes it sound more meaty at start up and general mild acceleration / deceleration. Its more boomy at about 80mph, but that's subjective IMO, give it a go! It's free!

You can uplug the electrical connector in the boot, but this will leave a fault code in the ECU (whether than bothers you or not its up to you).

Or you can unplug the vacuum line to the valve, again in the cluster area, and put a golf tee in the end of the hose (or anything else that will block the pipe if you're not a golfer like me)

Some people do the golf tee mod under the car, but it seems easier to me to do it inside the car, certainly cleaner.

Yes that's the one. I wouldn't bother disconnecting it from inside the boot. Just get underneath and pull it if the back box, then blank it off. It keeps a flap open inside the back box and gives a deeper tone.

Cross thread with DB

Sorry, butted in there!

If it's wet and cold, do the mod in the boot, else underneath!

OP - welcome to the 335i club!

Wow, glad you posted up this thread OP. I had no idea about this mod. I already thought the 335i sounded very fruity, especially with the roof down. I can't imagine what this would make it sound like!

How does one get access to this valve in the boot, do you need to removed the back of the light cluster?

As DB said. Disconnecting via the boot is by way of an electrical plug and can throw errors on the dash. The underneath way is a doddle. Two mins tops.

Or get a Jb4 and switch on the fly via steering wheel controls! Love it.

You need to look and see if it has any flaps that need holding open Carl.

I dont believe you can, the E46 m3 does not have flaps in the exhaust.

E46 330ci does.

You do NOT need a 'golf tee' to do this. Its just a forum anecdote.

Pull the rubber hose off the back of the nearside exhaust behind the back wheel.
Fold it over and tie it tight with a cable tie and stuff it back up under the heatshield.
Mines been like this for two years

if you want to really hear this car, Bastuck and others make some nice (expensive) rear boxes for the 335i.

Holding her flaps open is cheap

I love the sound of mine (standard) especially when it crackles and pops.

I tried the exhaust mod a few weeks ago, and whilst it sounds noisier I got a bit fed up with it and returned it to stock. It makes the fruity moments more special.

This is why turning it on and off via the steering wheel is great!

With Catless DPs it drones badly when cold with Flap open.. Also a bit tiresome on the motorway. Hence I only activate the flap when I'm in the mood - takes about 3 seconds and you can do it on the move...

Are there any disadvantages running the golf tee mod? I’ve heard some say that you lose a little lowdown torque due to reduced back pressure?
