To Nav or not to Nav
I've just bought a new house which cost a lot more than I thought so im reluctantly considering selling my car to fund the fixtures etc.
The car is an LCI 58 plate 320D SE with iDrive and Navigation (sort of..you will see). I dont use the navigation on the car as I own a TomTom and quite happy with it. When I switch the car on it gives me the message 'Insert Navigation DVD'. My question is that will it just need a new DVD from the dealers? (cost approx £30) Or will they need to connect to the HDD to update as it does not have a separate DVD drive. Another question is that would it put buyers off if I tried to sell it in this state or shall I get it resolved?

Get it fixed for sure. Would you buy a used car with a fault that you do not know whether it will take a tenner or 2 grand to fix. If its so cheap to sort get it done.

I'm not sure from your description whether you have the CCC system that reads the maps from a DVD or the later CIC system with the hard-drive? Either way, the map update is way more than £30 from the dealer but you can get rip-off DVDs for the earlier system for about that.
Davy is right though - few people would entertain buying a car where the first thing they see is an error message. I suspect you have the earlier system as if you had the later you wouldn't bother with a TomTom so a copy DVD might be your answer. |

I think only if the full "professional" system? The "business" system with the smaller display is still DVD, I believe.

I think its the DVD one but it only has one slot on the dash. Will that also be for the DVD?
I think I will pop down to Sandal Wakefield and get it checked out.

The LCI "Business" works from solid state memory I believe and has a CD Drive not DVD - it's boots from the internal memory & map updates are via the glovebox USB, but are a very silly price if needed

Yes I think on the "Business" model you can either play music from the DVD player or put the map disc in, but not both. This would make sense as to why the car is demanding the DVD if you switch to Nav
Now I know why you kept your TomTom... EDIT - just seen the post above - not sure if that's right but a CD? Surely not? Where is this CD player and what's it even for if one updates the flash memory via the glovebox USB?

usually you can pop out your Nav DVD once your route has been planned and put in a CD and still use navigation. If it is the DVD based Nav, then yes, just a DVD should sort it out. latest 2012 maps come in 3 DVDs, (Region separated, UK&I is DVD1) .. They are pricey at the dealers.. |

Yes, the DVD player you mean. That's why the error message says "Insert Navigation DVD". I think the e46 was the last thing that had a CD player. Even my e92 I used to own with no nav had a DVD player.

Hang on - I've just been thinking and I think you're right. It was the fact that it played MP3s (my e92, I mean) that was a bonus but I'm pretty sure it was just CDs now I think about it...
I thought though that BMW dropped CDs for map data with the Mk IV device from about 2003 onwards.

You can write your MP3 to the DVD as you would on a CD and pop it in, and it will treat it like a big 4.7 GB CD.. |

Mine reads movie DVDs quite happily and shows it on the sceen when stationary, but it's the Professional Media which might be different.

Cheers, I'll have to burn a DVD & have a play
It is very different - Business may not have cost much less but it's nowhere near as good as Professional - but I have split folding seats in compensation |

I tried burning MP3s to a DVD and the result, according to the car, is "unreadable CD" although iTunes has nested all the tracks into folders so that may be the case?
