Anyone uses nitrogen gas in tires?
Went to the dealer yesterday and found out they offer (for a fee) to pump in nitrogen gas in the tires instead of air. They say it lessens tire wear, more comfortable, and fuel efficient. Anyone here on nitro? Do you really notice any difference in the above claim? thanks

I dont think it can hurt, the way I remeber it, the benefit of nitrogen is that your tire pressure won't vary with different weather conditions. More constant tire-pressure leads to better fuel efficiency, etc etc..

I actually have the nitro in my "92 E34 525i. I had two new tires installed recently and they were filled with it accidently. The charge is usually $5 per tire. Honestly, the ride is firmer now and I have not seen any improvement in fuel economy.

i heard its a good idea. its suppose to be real good for long trips and stuff too. cause air expands when its hot, nitrogen doesnt. sounds like a smart move

I don't think the difference has to do with the nitrogen itself, but the fact that pumping the tires with 100% nitrogen means there is no water vapor in there (which is the portion that will vary depending on temperature/weather conditions) |

Mark90M3 is right on both pressure constant and water moisture. Costco now fills nitrogen for all tires bought from them.

FYI, I saw this on TV the show call 'RIDE' . Jay Leno was driving a Porche Carrera GT on the track try to get the top speed record for himself . They prepare the car and air up the tire with Nitrogen gas.

Nitrogen filled tyres will not make a difference unless you are doing 20 laps around the track. The expansion and contraction of air will not matter at all for normal driving condition, even long distance driving.
Unless you are going for track (extreme tyre temperatures) then it is absolutely worthless..... So as a guide, if you are using road tires, dont bother, or you want an excuse to stick a NOS sticker on your window (if you are into those things) hehehe |

Nitrogen in Tyres
I have just proven it. With Nitrogen in my 325, the car handling is much harder on the road, meaning that you feel every bump and ripple on the tar. I was told by a tire factory Engineer, that Nitrogen is only effective if you do long distances. Over 700 miles a day or so. This lets me think that if Nitrogen was so good, BMW would have recommended it in all their cars worldwide.
Have you guys thought about this : was Nitrogen tested with run-flat and DSC system on the E90 ? I don't think, so don't waste your time with Nitrogen !! |
