Which is quicker w/ tune, auto or stick?? And some basic questions
I'm very seriously considering 'consolidating' some cars and getting a 335I for the same reasons as everyone else. I want one car that can do everything fairly well. Obviously a 335I isn't going to run like my Mustang, but it will be more fun to drive in other ways because of the handling/braking etc....Anyways, I would definatly be taking this car to the track. I have seen some of the tuned car run some pretty stout times on here but I still have some questions.
With most quick performance cars (12s or quicker) an automatic will run slightly quicker with 1-3 MPH less trap speed. Does that hold true for a tuned 335I? Also, are you 6 speed manual guys having trouble getting the power down thrue just one tire as from what I understand their is no LSD and an upgrade is $3k which isn't going to happen. The auto w/ paddle shifters certainly would be much easier but the fun factor would be taken away a bit. That being said, I would be very frustrated if I went to the track with a 6 speed manual and couldn't get out of the 13s because the car wouldn't put the power down. With an auto, I'd fully expect mid 12s on drag radials with just a tune in good weather. As far as the Vishnu V2, how much more power should be expected over the initial versions and how close to the 'edge' would it be on pump gas? I have read quite a bit about this fuel pump issue and these cars going into 'limp' mode. Is their a specific build date after which all of these issues have been addressed? Thanks....

Eh, my Mustang has 569 rwhp....I'm quite certain a 335I is not going to run with it in a straightline....

From my experiences on turbo cars. Id have to go with the auto in the long run. In a straight line.
If the tranny is stout, the auto with turbo upgrades will be a force. 1. No boost loss between shifts. 2. More consecutive launching patterns. 3. No miss shifts 3. Brake boosting is a lot easier with an auto. (well for me it is) 4. A really good manual driver = an average auto driver in launch / shift reactions. A lot of the faster supra guys have auto cars. Then again we are talking about in a straight line. For the track I would think 6mt is better. My girlfriend is thinking of trading in her car and getting a 335i auto coupe. If she does Ill have to take off my mods and do some test.... Trust me she can drive Lol EDIT: Oh also the shifts in the auto arent slow at all. Its very comparable to lets say a DSG.

When I say track I meant drag strip, not auto cross etc....
And Fbody guys have mullets, not Mustang guys. Of course I have had 2 of them previously as well but I can't do the mullet thing....:-)

God damn! Why does every freaking thread on here turn into a comparison between the M3 and 335? The OP never even mentioned an M3. You guys need to let go.
OP: From what I've seen the auto is the trans to have if you are going to the dragstrip. Especially if you don't plan on getting a LSD. It's pretty much the same as the Supras. My wifes car has the step and it is a very nice trans. I've never been a fan of auto's but, I actually enjoy driving it. My 335 on order is a stick though. So, I'll be able to give a good comparison in September. |

Thats the stupidest thing i ever heard. I guess you should tell all the e46 m3 smg's to gtfo the track. Oh and the auto 911 turbos should probably not even bother with track as well huh. |

The quicker Supra Turbos do all tend to go single turbo and an auto. The autos tend to trap as well as the 6 speeds do mainly because boost isn't lost on shifts. I'm hoping its the same way with the 335I, I'd like to have respectable ETs and trap speeds if possible....

Perhaps I didn't make myself clear. My Mustang has 569 rear wheel horsepower, thats about 290 more then your 335I. I'm glad you are the king of the streets in your stock 335I but I can assure you their are plenty of other cars that will hand you your ass. My advice to you is to slow down a bit and enjoy the car. Being 16 and given a car like that is akin to your parents handing you a gun. Hopefully it shoots blanks....

Are you still posting sh*t about the new AT in the 335i? Stop talking until you've actually tested the car, or at least learned the facts.

Straight line performance, I'd go with the Auto. I'd probably to AT even if I were going to do some road course racing, but I'd agree that the MT would be better suited. Quote:
