Dealership and Downpipes...

Hi guys.

How are dealerships with downpipes if taking in for scheduled services? Could I be screwed out of my warranty? Do they check?

Thank you

MY SA and I had a long conversation regarding upgrades. Long story short: wheels, brakes, and cat/axelback exhaust were fine. FMIC, down pipes, flashes, METH all would raise an eyebrow and would cause potential problems. Hope this helps

I take in my car numerous times with DCI, Downpipes and FMIC and they say absolutely nothing about them, I think you're fine. They give me shit on my coilovers and wheels though whenever I want brake pads changed.

Thank you for the advice gentlemen. I just realized, if the tune comes out I will have a CEL due to the pipes. Uhh, this isn't good.

Depends on what service you're going in for. Oil change, brakes, standard scope don't worry about it. Warranty issue and engine related...you're out of luck. It takes some miles before cel comes on after removing a tune. Your dealer will still see cat not ready code though. They can note on service record if they want. It's a gamble and a game we all play at some point. Either you play it safe and remove the downpipes or roll the dice.

Will update tomorrow, but I just installed my downpipes and through a CEL. They haven't said a word, had the leaking differential, leaking tranny gasket, and belt tensioners covered under warranty.

My SA said exhaust, FMIC, downpipes, intake were not issues. He said when you get into the electronic stuff such as engine Management is when they get picky. There's no way in hell I will ever touch the downpipes on the XI again. Could you imagine swapping downpipes every time you had to go in for service/warranty work?

Did they give you any reasoning on why they give problems with certain parts? I can understand the downpipes causing a problem, but when it comes down to it, isnt an aftermarket FMIC a good thing to have for the engine anyway? Not sure why they would make a big deal of that.

Well I have a recent experience. My car is almost out of warranty and I took my car in with all mods besides one, you can guess which one that is. I had wastegate rattle and hte dealership refused to fix the issue because of my downpipes.

They tried saying the reason for this was the backpressure change with these downpipes. I took it up with BMWNA and they called the dealership and said they'd take their word. So I escalated the issue within the dealership and someone high in the service department said they'd do the wastegate adjustment. Think about it, cats are an emission issue and yes can decrease the backpressure. But once I brought up the fact that they make a performance exhaust and other oem items that also change the back pressure, they decided not to argue it anymore and agreed to fix the issue.

So I have to make an appointment to get this issue resolved and I don't plan on taking off my mods but my situation isn't typical.

This post deals with the HPFP recall but also implies the turbochargers/wastegate issue.
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=626977

From the quote below any mod that affects the turbos will void the warranty. This is from BMWNA and has nothing to do with your dealer cause BMWNA is the one that pays your dealer for warranty work. BMWNA has to approve the warranty claim before the dealer will cover the work on your car. So even if your dealer/SA is cool with mods any warranty claim can get shot down by BMWNA.

Quote:
...Per the terms of the original New Vehicle Limited Warranty, BMW NA will not provide warranty coverage to any Settlement Class Vehicle containing modifications or alterations to the turbocharger or its wastegates (software, hardware or otherwise), or evidencing other conditions not normally covered under the original New Vehicle Limited Warranty applicable to the Settlement Class Member's Settlement Class Vehicle.TIS : Dealer Communication System Message Page 1 of 2 http://www.bmwtis.net/tiscode/dcs/dc...asp?pk_id=1955 12/23/201
Modifications excluded from warranty coverage include any aftermarket parts that affect the turbocharger system.

You ever call BMWNA? They call the dealership and talk to a lead tech there and if they say, yes this should be approved because it's a prevalent issue and it's not from the mods, BMWNA will take their word... Most of the time. BMWNA relies on the dealerships knowledge in many cases.

I have an '08 E92 335Xi with CPO and have only had the JB4 installed so far.

I have AR downpipes and AFE Intakes waiting to be installed. Will it void my CPO warranty? I really want to have the DP's installed, but if it will void any warranty claims then it might not be so worth it..

The jb4 will most likely void your warranty if they notice it. It really depends on what you take it in for though I think.

I'm cool w/ my SA and they don't really care about mods as long as it's not a warranty claim...

Its expected that you shouldn't care if its not a warranty claim and paying out of pocket...
