I recently purchased an 09 335xi and the dealer said I only need to change the oil every 15K miles. Is this true. That seems way too long. I have come up on 3K miles since I made the purchase.

BMW recommended service interval is 15K miles... However, i did it every 7K or so. That way every other oil change was free. No way i'd run 15k between oil changes.

Some people say 5-8k miles, some say 8-10k miles, some say 12-15k miles.

Its up to you, the more you change the oil the happier your internals will be.

I do 5-7K. Could probably squeeze out 10K no problem but the reality is when you go that long you end up needing to add oil anyway, at that point just change it out.

Without an oil analysis its just an opinion where to change it.

Synthetic oils can be used driven longer than standard oils. Yeah, you could go up to 15k, but turbo'd cars' oils tend to break down a bit faster (higher temps). So 5-7.5K seems more than reasonable time to change the oil.
