Help with RFT's

I had the flat tire monitor tell me I had a flat today. When I took it to a tire shop I found out that both tires on the passenger side had a nail in each one. I know RFT's aren't supposed to be repaired but I did it anyways. The nail on each tire was in the middle. Did I make a mistake by plugging em.

As far as i know you will be ok. If it would be on sidewall it would be a different story. Make sure you reset sensor...Anyone?

You should be good. I assume they did the plug from the outside? Better way is to break the tire off the rim and run a different kind of plug from the inside. But like I say, you should be good. Don't even worry about it.

Nope, RFT's can be repaired, just a little harder.

Thanks guys. I did the reset. Tired still have like 60-70% thread and I would hate them to be a total loss. Next one will definitely be non RFT'S.

I believe the bigger issue is not how they are repaired, but how long you drove on them with no pressure.

You are welcome. I havent had any negative experience with RFT other than being pricey, hard and rigid but I love the handling and therefore I can deal with it. Most of my driving is freeway, but I know these kind of tires are not good for bad roads.

Definitely repairable. And you're perfectly fine as long as it's not in the sidewall.

I plugged my RFT's 6 months ago, with no problems to this date. The RFT's definitely get flats much easier than non-RFT's.

You should really do a patch from the inside instead of a plug.

Dealers says they cannot be fixed because they want you to buy their insurance.

I've plugged or patched (not sure what Discount Tired did) two of my tires without issue. It's no biggie if doable.

Patching is to be preferred over plugs, but not all shops can mount/dismount RFTs. I've patched several on both of my previous cars. Nothing wrong with that, so long as you did not drive them a long distance flat.

Most of my driving is in the city, so while I know a lot of people hate the RFTs, I find them quite convenient. If I hit a nail, I just drive to the tire shop and get it fixed. No missed appointments, no changing tires on the side of the road.

Just so everyone knows... America's Tires will patch your tires for FREE!!! They patched my RFT and I ran it until it's completely bald. I feel so bad I didn't buy my tires from them. But hey...

Rich is right. The reason they usually say they will not repair them is when they have gone flat and the car has been driven for a while on the sidewall thus compromising its integrity.

Love the handling?? Wow. Turn in is sharper but after that its brutal. Side wall flex plays a big part in handling/suspenion. Look at the sidewall on F1 tire.

+1. If the tires have been driven with zero pressure or very low pressure in them for very long then it is not recommended to repair them.
